Apply to Serve on Budget Committee

The district is seeking candidates to fill four seats on 4J's budget committee. The application period begins Friday, Sept. 4, and ends Wednesday, Sept. 30. Apply now!
The budget committee reviews annual budget proposals to ensure that the district’s spending plan supports its goals. It examines the proposed budget presented each spring, listens to community comments, and then approves the budget and property tax rates and forwards them to the school board for adoption.
Eligible residents interested in serving on the budget committee can apply by completing and submitting:
- an online application form OR
- a printed application form available at the 4J Education Center, 200 N. Monroe St.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must reside within the school district’s boundaries and must be registered to vote. Applicants can’t be district employees, but they don’t need to have students enrolled in 4J schools.
Three seats are open as their three-year terms have expired. Budget committee members appointed to those seats will serve full three-year terms, or until June 30, 2029. The vacancy for the fourth seat was prompted by the resignation of a budget committee member, and the successor will complete the remaining two years of the existing term, or until June 30, 2028. The holder of the shorter, two-year term will be determined randomly after the board makes all four appointments.
After the application period closes, school board members will review the applicants at a meeting Wednesday, Oct. 7, and determine six finalists who will be invited to speak at the following board meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 21. The board will deliberate and appoint four of the finalists to the committee that same evening.
The budget committee has 14 members: the seven school board members and an equal number of citizen volunteers appointed by the board. Budget committee members are volunteers and are not paid for their service.
