Why Is the School Being Renamed?

Why is the School Being Renamed?

In June 2026, the Eugene School District 4J Board directed the district to begin a process to rename César Chávez Elementary School. The decision followed community concerns and discussion about the school’s current name and information related to César Chávez’s legacy.

The Board determined that moving forward with a new name would provide an opportunity for the school community to shape an identity for the future—one that reflects the values, hopes, and sense of belonging of the students and families the school serves today.

The renaming process is not intended to erase the school’s history or the significance César Chávez has held for many members of our community. Part of this process is listening carefully to what the Chávez community values about its history and identity, what should be honored and preserved, and what students and families want the school’s next chapter to represent.

The district is committed to approaching this work thoughtfully, transparently, and with care. Students, families, staff, alumni, Tribal partners, community organizations, and the broader community will have opportunities to participate throughout the process.
