March 31 Budget Committee Meeting Canceled

Eugene School District 4J's first budget committee meeting of the spring will be April 8, rather than March 31 as initially planned. Superintendent Miriam Mickelson intends that staff will use the additional time to review and confirm updated financial projections that have shown a budget shortfall for 2026-27 that is $10-$20 million greater than the $30 million used in planning to date.
4J's budget committee had been scheduled to meet three times in the budget process, on March 31, April 8 and April 22. Now the group will meet April 8, 22 and possibly May 6 before approving final budget amounts and tax rates for school board consideration. The date of a third meeting is still being determined.
District staff will present detail of the recent projections and the differences from earlier forecasts with the release of the 2026-27 Proposed Budget Document at the April 8 budget committee meeting.
Dr. Mickelson has shared that she intends to use the full scope of staffing reduction authority previously provided by the board, which allows for removing up to 269 occupied positions (the reductions planned to meet the earlier $30 million target did not reach that level). She does not anticipate requesting additional staffing reduction authority. The district will likely also consider one-time transfers from other funds to help address the expanded gap. At this time, school closures and additional schedule changes (beyond the middle school schedule change already approved and announced) are not being considered for the 2026–27 school year.
"School finance, particularly in Oregon, is complex and involves variables that are often outside of our control," Mickelson said. "At the same time, this situation makes clear that we must continue to review, refine, and strengthen our internal systems and practices to be responsive to current variables such as declining enrollment and inflation."
