Alternative high school program will have new building at 4J Education Center
Eugene School District 4J’s ECCO alternative high school program will have a new home downtown this fall. ECCO will relocate in 2019–20 from the Lane Community College campus to the downtown area, next to the district office building at 200 North Monroe Street.
While students and many staff are on summer break, the district will contract with Modern Building Systems to erect a high-quality pre-fabricated building that will serve as ECCO’s new home. The building will be constructed to the northeast of the 4J Education Center, near the city’s Owen Rose Garden.
Site preparation is slated to begin in June, and construction is expected to be completed shortly before the start of the 2019–20 school year. The new building will include six classrooms, childcare rooms, support areas, school office space and a common area. The existing kitchen facility at the Education Center will be used to provide school meal service.
The alternative high school program has been housed at the LCC main campus since 2013, but the district’s lease agreement with LCC expires at the end of this school year. A new building at the 4J Education Center site was determined to be the most accessible and centrally located for students following the evaluation of several different sites, because students from across the district enroll in the alternative high school program. The former Bailey Hill Elementary School building near Churchill High School in southwest Eugene was also considered as a potential next home for ECCO, but transportation to and from that school site was determined to be a challenge for many students in the program.
While planning for the ECCO program’s relocation, the district also is exploring alternative education options to better serve students in the future, including online learning options and providing more support at all high schools for students who fall behind on earning credits, so they don’t have to leave their home high school to get back on track for graduation.
ECCO will continue to serve current students attending the program and other students who find a separate alternative high school setting their best fit to help them succeed.
