Help Us Keep Sickness at Bay
Public health officials are Lane County are reporting an increase of respiratory and influenza-like illnesses in the community. Families, staff and students are encouraged to be mindful of the simple steps they can take to help reduce the spread of sickness.
These illnesses can include common viruses such as colds and the flu, and the more serious pertussis (whooping cough), COVID, and RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus). To help reduce the spread of illness, here are some important reminders and tips:
- Keep your student home if they are sick
If your student is experiencing symptoms such as temperature of 100.4°F or higher, cough, runny or stuffy nose, headache, body aches, fatigue or wheezing, they should stay home from school until they are symptom-free for 24 hours without medication. Symptom guide: English and Spanish
- Encourage good hygiene practices
Remind your student to:- Wash their hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
- Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or their elbow.
- Avoid touching their face, especially their eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Wear a mask in public spaces
- Consider vaccination
Ensure your child is up to date on their immunizations to help prevent infection or reduce symptoms. Vaccines are available for all three influenza like illnesses (flu, COVID and RSV), plus other respiratory infections. Contact your health care provider or school to review vaccine records if needed.
- Stay informed
The district will continue monitoring illness trends in our schools. If specific health concerns arise, we will provide updates to keep you informed.
Thank you for partnering with us to maintain a healthy school community. If you have questions or concerns, please contact your school’s nurse or the district office healthservice@4j.lane.edu.
