The following land acknowledgment statement is shared by the board chair at the beginning of each school board meeting. The statement text was provided by Dr. Brenda Brainard and the 4J Natives Program. 

The Eugene School Board would like to acknowledge that our institution sits on the homelands of the Kalapuya people.

In the treaties of 1851 and 1854–1855, and the subsequent forced removals of many Indian people from western Oregon, some of the Kalapuya were moved to the Grand Ronde Reservation and some were moved to the Siletz Reservation.  It is important to note that all of Lane County was an important trading and gathering area for camas and other resources.

During the Restoration Era, from 1977 to 1989, Lane County was designated as the Service Area for the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians, the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Indians, the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, the Coquille Indian Tribe, and the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Indians.

Eugene School District 4J acknowledges that descendants of the original and Service Area inhabitants of this land are still here today. They are thriving members of our schools and our communities. Countless members of other tribes now also call our community and schools their home.

We wish to thank those original stewards of this land. We as fellow stewards of this land wish to remember that we need to take good care of this land and take good care of all members of our school district and community.

La siguiente declaración de reconocimiento de tierras es leída al comienzo de cada reunión de la junta escolar por la presidenta de la junta escolar. La declaración fue proveída por la Dra. Brenda Brainard y el Programa de Nativos de 4J. 

La Junta Escolar de Eugene quiere reconocer que nuestra institución se asienta en las tierras ancestrales de la gente Kalapuya.

Debido a los tratados de 1851 y de 1854 a 1855, y los subsecuentes traslados forzados de mucha gente indígena del oeste de Oregón, muchos de los Kalapuya fueron llevados a la Reservación Grand Ronde y algunos fueron llevados a la Reservación Siletz. Es importante notar que todo el condado de Lane era un área importante de recolección de camas e intercambio de otros recursos. 

Durante la era de restauración, entre 1977 y 1989, el condado de Lane fue designado como el Área de Servicio de las Tribus Confederadas de Coos, Umpqua baja y los Saiuslaw, las Tribus Confederadas de Grand Ronde, las Tribus Confederadas de Siletz,  la tribu Coquille y la banda Cow Creek de los Umpqua.

El Distrito Escolar de Eugene 4J reconoce que los descendientes de los habitantes originales y de los del Área de Servicio de esta tierra están todavía aquí hoy. Ellos son miembros prósperos de nuestras escuelas y nuestras comunidades. Numerosos miembros de otras tribus ahora también tienen su hogar en nuestra comunidad y son parte de nuestras escuelas. 

Deseamos agradecer a esos guardianes originales de estas tierras. Nosotros como compañeros guardianes de estas tierras deseamos recordar que necesitamos cuidar muy bien estas tierras y cuidar muy bien a todos los miembros de nuestro distrito escolar y comunidad.
