Facilities Planning

Educational Specifications

Educational Specifications (“Ed Spec”) are facility design guidelines that articulate a district’s educational philosophy, approach, programs and goals. The Ed Spec encapsulates the school, describing the relationship between programmatic requirements as they relate to the space, the design and the user. It is a living document, which facility planners, architects and engineers use to plan and design new and existing schools. With the desire and need to modernize existing 4J schools, Ed Specs for elementary schools were updated in 2019 to guide future planning.

Long-Range Facilities Plan

Eugene School District 4J owns and maintains 30 open school buildings serving more than 16,000 students. Most of these schools were built in the 1940s to 1960s and many are reaching the end of their useful life.

The district’s long-range facilities plan identifies major school building improvement projects for the next 10 years and calls for the district to submit bond measure requests to voters to fund these improvements.

The plan was updated in 2013 and again in 2018, based on school board decisions made after a thoughtful public process and significant public input.
