4J Serves 2 Millionth Free Meal

District reaches major milestone: 2 million free meals served to youth during pandemic

Eugene School District 4J has served two million free youth meals since the coronavirus pandemic first closed school buildings in March 2020.

4J’s nutrition services team served the millionth free meal on the day before Thanksgiving, and served another million meals in the following six months.

When Oregon school buildings were closed due to the pandemic in March 2020, the district immediately pivoted and reenvisioned the food service program to provide free meals for youth outside of school cafeterias.

The free meal program has expanded and evolved to meet shifting needs, but the district’s commitment to providing free nutritious meals to all 4J students and area youth remains unchanged.

Free youth food boxes can be picked up every Wednesday through June 30 from 12:45–2:15 p.m. at eight 4J schools: Arts & Technology Academy, Cal Young Middle School, Howard Elementary School, Kennedy Middle School, Madison Middle School, Monroe Middle School, Roosevelt Middle School and Spencer Butte Middle School.

Families can pick up a youth food box at any location, regardless of where they live or attend school. Families who are not able to pick up a food box at the scheduled time can email 4jmeals@4j.lane.edu and request to pick up a meal box at the district office at a different time.

Free food boxes will continue to be available this summer, and all students will receive free meals at school next year, thanks to the extension of a federal program that makes it possible for 4J to provide free meals for all students and youth without income or application requirements through the end of the 2020–21 school year.
