Sports Update: Some Spectators to Be Allowed

Lane County’s improving risk level will allow a limited number of spectators on-site

Student athletes are back on the field. Soon, some spectators will be back on the sidelines as well.

Public health conditions have improved in our county, thanks to community efforts to reduce the spread of COVID-19. The State of Oregon has announced that Lane County’s designation will be lowered from High Risk to the Moderate Risk category effective this Friday, March 12.

Counties designated as Moderate Risk may allow some spectators at athletic events, although numbers are still limited. The Oregon Health Authority has established limits for the maximum number of people who can be in a gym, on the field and in the stands.

Given these requirements, the number of spectators who can attend 4J high school games will be limited and will vary by site and sport, in compliance with state rules.

Outdoor sports fields can allow 150 spectators in the stands; indoor gyms can accommodate fewer. Local public high schools’ athletic directors have agreed that this will generally be divided to provide two-thirds of the seats for home team spectators and one-third for visiting team spectators. Student athletes’ families will receive details from their school or team.

On-site spectators will be required to:

  • Have a ticket for the event
  • Wear a face covering over the nose, mouth and chin at all times
  • Maintain 6 feet of distance from other households (families that live together may sit together)
  • Enter and exit from designated areas
  • Not enter the playing area
  • Clear the field or gym immediately following the game.

Games will continue to be livestreamed online for an unlimited number of families and friends to watch.
