School Board Restores Staff Furlough Day

March 13 restored to staff training / planning day

Academic Calendars

The Eugene School Board has approved restoring a staff professional development and planning day, previously scheduled as one of two unpaid furlough days this year, to the 2014–15 calendar.

The district’s agreements with employee agreements this year included furlough days, although many fewer than in past years. March 13, originally scheduled as a no-school day for professional development and planning, was designated an unpaid furlough day for all staff. A second furlough day for teachers and administrators is scheduled to shorten students’ school year by one day at the end of the year.

Now, with an improved revenue projection for the current year, the school board has approved restoring the staff work day to the calendar. March 13 will be a professional development and planning day, as it was originally scheduled to be. Teachers, principals, staff and others have expressed strong interest in restoring the lost learning and planning time, in part to support the implementation of the Common Core State Standards and the Smarter Balanced assessments that will be administered for the first time this spring.

The change does not have a direct impact for students and families, as March 13 would be a no-school day for students whether it is a furlough day or a professional development/planning day.

The remaining furlough day has been scheduled in June, making the last day of school one day earlier. The single instructional furlough day makes this the longest school year 4J students have seen in several years.

If no school days are missed due to hazardous weather, students’ last day of school will be Wednesday, June 10. The last day will be a full day for middle and high school students and an early release day for elementary students. If there are any school days missed due to hazardous weather (“snow days”) they will be made up at the end of the school year on the scheduled furlough day and on additional added days if needed.
