While school’s out for the summer, work is underway across Eugene School District 4J to repair and improve school buildings and get ready to build new ones.
Local voters approved a bond measure last fall to replace three aging school buildings and fund other capital improvements at every 4J school. Since then, planning has been underway for the first facility improvements.
Several facility improvements will be completed this summer in addition to the annual summer work of deep cleaning, grounds-keeping and maintenance. Other summer work includes outreach, planning and design for future construction.
Some of the bond-related work on the summer to-do list includes:
• ECCO: An 8,000-square-foot prefabricated building is under construction next to the 4J Education Center this summer. It will be completed in time for students and staff to start the school year at the new site this fall.
• Chinese Immersion: A two-classroom portable building will be installed to house the expansion of the Chinese Immersion School at the Crest Drive school site, where Family School is also located.
• Swing School: Preparations are underway for a new pre-fabricated facility at the former Willard Elementary School site to be used in future years as a temporary school site for Edison and Camas Ridge students while the new elementary schools are under construction. Survey and geotechnical work will take place this summer, and the facility will be planned and constructed over the coming school year.
• New School Design:
– Select architects and general contractors for the new Edison Elementary and North Eugene High School
– Engage community conversation about Edison design direction
– Begin schematic design for the new North Eugene High and Edison Elementary
• Equitable Athletic Facilities: Design and planning begin this summer for a new North Eugene softball field to be installed in summer 2020.
• Security: Video cameras will finish being installed at high schools and begin at middle schools.
• Fire Safety: Stage curtains will be installed at all district high schools as well as Arts & Technology Academy, Madison, Monroe, Spencer Butte and Gilham.
• Energy Efficiency:
– Window replacement at South Eugene High School
– LED lighting at Spencer Butte Middle School and Transportation Services.
– Environmental controls at Adams (building controls) and Edgewood (office HVAC & controls)
• Accessibility: Restroom modification for the new Life Skills classroom at Charlemagne
• Roofing: Partial re-roof of Kennedy and South Eugene; mansard roof replacement at Awbrey Park
• Boilers: Sheldon boiler will be replaced
• Parking lots: Buena Vista parking lots will be resurfaced and restriped
• Playgrounds: McCornack will receive a partial playground replacement
• Floors: Several gym floors will be refinished; flooring at Sheldon High will be removed and replaced
• Safe Routes to School:
– On-site pathway improvements at Awbrey Park, Spencer Butte, McCornack, Adams
– Skateboard and scooter racks will be installed at all buildings.
Many of these improvements are possible thanks to bond voters’ support. For more updates on bond-funded school improvements, see Bond News and send a message to bond@4j.lane.edu to subscribe to receive occasional emails.
