General Information

Elementary and middle school: Elementary students who live one mile or more from their neighborhood school and middle school students who live 1.5 miles or more from their neighborhood school may ride 4J buses to and from that school. Exceptions are granted for students who live closer than the 1-mile or 1.5-mile limits, but who cannot safely walk to school.

Bus-riding students must register as such during their first week of riding the bus. Registration is important for several reasons, but most notably so that the driver may become acquainted with students riding his or her bus. Students eligible to ride 4J buses will receive a letter at the beginning of the school year explaining district and state school bus rules and regulations. Parents are expected to go over these rules with their children to help assure they will be safe while riding the bus.

Bus-riding students are assigned a stop based on where they live. Students must use their assigned stop unless they have written permission from a parent or guardian and the school to do otherwise. Other students may be allowed to ride the bus under certain circumstances; parents should call the 4J Transportation Department at 541-790-7474.

High school: The district provides school bus services only for those high school students who live more than a mile and a half from a Lane Transit District (LTD) stop or if it is required so that the student can participate in a special education program. However, Lane Transit District (LTD) and 4J have teamed up to provide special school services and discounted bus passes to 4J high school students. The discounted monthly passes are available at each 4J high school. The bus pass is available to any student who is enrolled in a 4J high school. Passes are valid anytime on any LTD bus route. Students may be asked to show school identification when boarding. Low income high school students who attend their neighborhood school, and live more than a mile and a half from it, may be eligible for a free bus pass by contacting their high school business office.

Bus safety: All students who ride the school bus receive training on how to behave in the bus, how to cross the road when a bus has its safety lights on, where to find emergency equipment, and how to evacuate a bus in an emergency. Schools also train other students on basic school bus safety when they ride the school bus on field trips or other activities. For more information on bus safety, or for a copy of bus safety rules and evacuation procedures, call the 4J Transportation Department at 541-790-7474. A copy of the safety rules will be included in school newsletters in the early fall.
