The budget committee reviews annual budget proposals to ensure that the district is planning to spend money in furtherance of district goals. It examines the proposed budget presented in the spring, listens to community comments, and then approves the budget and property tax rates and forwards them to the school board for adoption.
The budget committee has 14 members: the seven school board members and an equal number of citizen volunteers appointed by the board. The district is seeking to fill five open citizen seats.
Three seats are open as their three-year terms have expired. Budget committee members appointed to those seats will serve full three-years, or until June 30, 2026. Incumbents to those seats can reapply for those new terms.
The remaining two seats were vacated when former members Tom Di Liberto and Ericka Thessen were elected and appointed, respectively, to the school board earlier this year. Budget committee members appointed to those seats will complete the existing term, or until June 30, 2024
Applicants must reside within school district boundaries and must be registered to vote. They can not be district employees, but they don’t need to have students enrolled in 4J schools. Budget committee members are volunteers and are not compensated for their service.
Residents interested in serving on the budget committee can apply in several ways:
- Complete and submit the online application form
- Printed application packets can be picked up at the 4J district office, 200 N. Monroe Ave.
The board will interview finalists for the positions and vote on appointments on Monday, December 11.
