Superintendent Comments – November 1, 2023

Good Evening Everyone, 

First, I wanted to take time during my comments to respond to recently expressed concerns regarding changes made in our efforts to re-organize certain functions of the district.  Specifically, strong feelings were shared from staff and members of the community about the changes to the district’s Equity Department.  In speaking with folks after hearing those comments, it became clear to me the changes we made left some to question if not fear we were possibly turning our back on the equity work that needs to be done in all aspects of this district.  For that, I offer a sincere and unconditional apology.  Most importantly, I want to state that I hear you when you say those changes need to be re-visited, I hear you when you state that the district’s commitment to equity should not be muted in any way and I hear you when you say you feel those changes resulted in a less than full throated commitment to equity in our district.  I want to be clear that turning our backs on the equity work before us was not my intention.  I also want to be clear that my intentions are less important than the impact our changes have had on members of the school district community.  

I have heard one should never judge the value of an apology the moment it is given.  To that end, over the coming weeks district leadership will be inviting interested folks to conversations about how to best structure our efforts so that we are more effective in our pursuit of educational equity and that those structures are clearly visible while at the same time the bedrock of all we do.  I welcome broad voices from the district and the community to help us grapple with the complexities of re-imaging how a school district can best serve its community and how to ensure the entire organization is oriented with the right focus in mind.  

Community is not dependent upon universal agreement or acquiescence.  Instead, community is dependent upon the willingness to share dissenting opinion and to take those opinions into account when determining how to move forward from points of disagreement.  For that, I wish to thank those who took the time to share their thoughts on what is best for the students, families and staff of this district.  In return, I offer my commitment to re-visiting what is not working for those same students, families and staff until we find the most promising path forward.

Buenas tardes a todos,

Primero, quería tomarme un tiempo durante mis comentarios para responder a las preocupaciones expresadas recientemente con respecto a los cambios realizados en nuestros esfuerzos para reorganizar ciertas funciones del distrito. Específicamente, el personal y los miembros de la comunidad compartieron fuertes sentimientos sobre los cambios en el Departamento de Equidad del distrito. Al hablar con la gente después de escuchar esos comentarios, me quedó claro que los cambios que hicimos dejaron a algunos en duda, si no miedo, de que posiblemente estuviéramos dando la espalda al trabajo de equidad que debe realizarse en todos los aspectos de este distrito. Por ello, ofrezco una disculpa sincera e incondicional. Lo más importante es que quiero decirles que los escucho cuando dicen que es necesario revisar esos cambios, los escucho cuando dicen que el compromiso del distrito con la equidad no debe ser silenciado de ninguna manera y los escucho cuando dicen que creen que estos cambios resultaron por un compromiso menos que total con la equidad en nuestro distrito. Quiero dejar claro que darle la espalda al trabajo de equidad que tenemos ante nosotros no era mi intención. También quiero dejar claro que mis intenciones son menos importantes que el impacto que nuestros cambios han tenido en los miembros de la comunidad del distrito escolar.

He oído que uno nunca debe juzgar el valor de una disculpa en el momento en que se da. Con ese fin, durante las próximas semanas, los líderes del distrito invitarán a personas interesadas a conversar sobre cómo estructurar mejor nuestros esfuerzos para que seamos más efectivos en nuestra búsqueda de la equidad educativa y que esas estructuras sean claramente visibles y al mismo tiempo la base de todo lo que hacemos. Doy la bienvenida a voces amplias del distrito y la comunidad para ayudarnos a lidiar con las complejidades de reimaginar cómo un distrito escolar puede servir mejor a su comunidad y cómo garantizar que toda la organización esté orientada con el enfoque correcto en mente.

La comunidad no depende del acuerdo o la aquiescencia universal. Más bien, la comunidad depende de la voluntad de compartir opiniones disidentes y de tenerlas en cuenta al determinar cómo avanzar a partir de puntos de desacuerdo. Por eso, deseo agradecer a quienes se tomaron el tiempo de compartir sus pensamientos sobre lo que es mejor para los estudiantes, las familias y el personal de este distrito. A cambio, ofrezco mi compromiso de revisar lo que no funciona para esos mismos estudiantes, familias y personal hasta que encontremos el camino más prometedor a seguir.
