School Choice – Frequently Asked Questions

Our information sessions for school choice requests for the 2024-25 school year were held in January 2024.

  • Every residence in 4J is within the attendance boundary of a neighborhood elementary, middle and high school. Most students attend their neighborhood school, and there are many advantages to doing so.

    Students may enroll in their own neighborhood schools at any time. Families are encouraged to register their rising kindergarten students early, anytime after the beginning of the calendar year. For more information, please visit our enrollment page.

    To request enrollment in a different school, use the school choice process.

  • Students who live in 4J may request to enroll in any school, provided there is a space available to meet the student’s needs. 4J has several “alternative” or “magnet” elementary schools that do not have neighborhood attendance areas. Enrollment at these schools is by request only and families from any neighborhood may apply to have their child enroll. In addition, students may request to transfer to a different neighborhood school.

    A lottery is held each year to determine the order in which requests are granted for available openings at each school and the remaining students are placed on the school’s waiting list. To participate in the lottery, submit your school choice request by the lottery deadline. Requests received after the lottery deadline will be accommodated if space is available or placed on the school’s waiting list in the order received within priority areas.   • Charter schools are independent entities that have their own admission procedures. They are not included in the 4J school choice request and lottery process. For more information or to request enrollment in a charter school, please contact the school directly.

  • Eugene School District 4J welcomes families who live outside of the district to apply for a transfer to 4J and request placement at their preferred schools. A lottery is held each year to determine the order in which requests will be granted for any available openings or placed on the school’s waiting list. To participate in the lottery, submit your interdistrict transfer request by the lottery deadline. Requests received after the lottery deadline will be accommodated if space is available or placed on the school’s waiting list in the order received within priority areas.   • Requests are accepted as space is available. Students who live within the school district boundary have priority for any openings. There may or may not be a space available to meet the student’s needs at their preferred school. Some schools and grades will not be able to accommodate all of the students who wish to attend.

    District residents may make a request to attend any 4J school. There may or may not be any spaces available.

    Non-residents may request an interdistrict transfer to any 4J school that is accepting requests from non-resident students. This includes students who live outside the district and are currently attending a 4J school (such as those who enrolled via an interdistrict transfer) and are progressing to middle or high school. (The sole exception is K–12 language immersion programs, in which students may continue automatically in the program through middle and high school.) If a current language immersion student moves outside the district, a school choice request is needed to remain in the program, and is only possible if the school is accepting requests from non-resident students.

  • While it is important for children to have consistent classroom instruction, we understand that parents may sometimes need to leave the 4J District area for an extended period of time.  After 10 days of no attendance, your student will be unenrolled.

    If you have a current school choice seat, please contact schoolchoice@4j.lane.edu to let us know how long your family will be gone.  School choice seats can be held for up to 1 year, but you must contact school choice first to ensure your seat is saved.   After 1 year, students will no longer have their seat saved and you will need to reapply for a seat through school choice.

  • Neighborhood residents may enroll in their neighborhood schools at any time. Next, students who live in the district have priority for any openings at neighborhood schools and alternative schools. Remaining openings may be available to students who live outside the district after 4J residents are accommodated (not all schools will be open to requests from students who live outside of 4J).

    Lotteries and post-lottery waitlist placement give priority to students who have moved and are requesting to continue enrollment in the school or district (“returning students”) or will be co-enrolled with a sibling. There also are priorities at certain schools for students who are neighborhood residents, heritage language speakers, or qualified to receive free or reduced-price school meals.

    • 4J residents before non-residents
    • Returning students
    • Siblings who will be co-enrolled (enrolled in the same school)
    • Free and reduced-meal qualification (in-district lottery only; selected schools)
    • Language speakers (language immersion schools only)
    • High school residence area (Eugene International High School only)

    Returning student: To qualify for a returning student priority at a school, the student must be attending the school for the current school year and requesting to continue enrollment at the same school next school year.

    Co-enrolled sibling: To qualify for a sibling priority, the students must reside in the same immediate household in a family relationship, and the applicant’s sibling must be attending the school for the current school year and would be co-enrolled at the school with the applicant the next school year. For K–12 language immersion programs, this priority applies to siblings who will be enrolled in the program at the same time, regardless of school level.

    Language speaker: To qualify for a language speaker priority for a language immersion program, the language must be the student’s first language, or the parent/guardian’s first language and the dominant language spoken at home. Language priority also may be granted to students entering second grade or higher from an immersion program in another school district.

  • You may apply to add your student to a school’s waiting list for the current or coming year, if an appropriate application period is open.

    There is no early waiting list for any 4J school; parents of preschoolers must wait until the year their student will be entering kindergarten to submit a school choice request.

    School waiting lists are reset every year. If a space does not become available for your student in the year you applied for, and you still wish to enroll in that school, you must submit a new application the following year.

  • No. Requests are granted in an order determined by lottery. All eligible requests received in the appropriate time period will be included in the lottery. We do recommend completing your request form well before the deadline, so you have time to resolve any questions or technical difficulties.

    Post-lottery requests are accommodated first-come, first-served as space is available, and placed on school waiting lists in the order received within priority areas.

  • Yes, you must fill out a separate school choice request form for each student. 4J makes every effort to keep siblings connected in schools. However, only your neighborhood school can guarantee co-enrollment for siblings.

    If you have twins, you must complete a request form for each student but you have the option of entering them into the lottery together or separately. More information is given in the request form instructions.

  • Submit one application for each student. You can request one, two or three schools maximum. Do not include your neighborhood school or any charter schools among your three choices. You will be asked to rank your choices (1,2,3). Once you have been offered and accepted a space at a school, your student’s name will be withdrawn from your lower-ranked schools’ lists but will remain on the waitlist for higher-ranked schools.

  • Residents and non-residents whose request was not fulfilled: YES. School waiting lists do not carry over to the following year. If your student is not offered enrollment at a school for a given year, and you still wish to enroll in that school, you will need to reapply the following year.

    District residents who move: YES. If your student attends their neighborhood school and you move out of the school boundary, or if your student attends a 4J school as a resident and you move out of the district, they may complete the school year. To re-enroll for the following school year, you will need to apply for a transfer. Returning students have first priority for enrollment among district residents and among non-residents.

    District residents enrolled on a school choice transfer and remaining at same school: NO. Once a resident student has been enrolled in a 4J school via school choice, the transfer will remain valid until the student completes that school level (elementary, middle, high) or moves out of the school district’s boundaries.

    Residents and non-residents changing schools: YES. Upon changing school levels (from elementary to middle school or from middle to high school), students must submit a school choice or transfer request if the new school they wish to attend is not their neighborhood school. Students who attended a neighborhood elementary or middle school via school choice do not have automatic enrollment or any priority to attend the middle or high school in that neighborhood. (The exception is K–12 language immersion programs.)

    Non-residents enrolled on a temporary interdistrict transfer: YES. If your student moved out of the Eugene School District mid-year and was granted a temporary transfer to remain enrolled at their school, you need to apply for an interdistrict transfer for the following year in order to stay enrolled in 4J.

    Non-residents enrolled on a non-temporary transfer and remaining at same school: NO. If your student enrolled in a 4J school on a non-temporary interdistrict transfer, or enrolled in 2018 or earlier on an “open enrollment” transfer, the transfer will remain valid until the student completes that school level. When changing school level from elementary to middle or middle to high school, students will need to submit a new request for a school placement during the interdistrict transfer application period. (The exception is K–12 language immersion programs.)

    Non-residents enrolled on a non-temporary transfer and changing schools: YES. Students who live outside of 4J, are enrolled in 4J on an interdistrict transfer, and wish to enroll in a different 4J school (such as upon changing school levels from elementary to middle school or from middle to high school), must submit a request for school placement through the transfer process for non-residents. Such students have priority over students not currently enrolled in the district. Students who attend a 4J elementary or middle school on a transfer do not have automatic enrollment or any priority to enroll in the middle or high school in that neighborhood. (The exception is K–12 language immersion programs.)

    Language immersion students who have not moved: NO. Students in a K–12 language immersion program remain enrolled in the program and do not need to submit a school choice request when moving to the next level. If a student wishes to exit the language immersion program but continue attending the host middle or high school, they must submit a school choice request to remain enrolled in the host school unless it is their neighborhood school.

    Language immersion students who have moved to a new District: YES. Students in a K–12 language immersion program need to submit a school choice request when moving across any District boundary line. If you move from the Eugene 4J District to another District, it may not be possible to remain in the language immersion program if the school is closed to non-resident requests.

  • The lottery does not determine whether there is a space for your student at a school. The lottery determines the order in which any available spaces are offered to students and the remaining students are placed on the school’s waiting list.

  • If there is a space for your student to enroll at a school you requested, you will be notified by email, text message or both. Note that this may be shortly after the lottery is conducted—or it may be days, weeks or months later. Parents also may check their student’s status at any time by logging into their account at 4jschoolchoice.schoolmint.com. If you receive an offer to enroll, it will direct you to log into your account dashboard at 4jschoolchoice.schoolmint.com to accept or decline the seat.

    IMPORTANT: Parents must accept an offered seat within 7 calendar days of the notification or the seat will be automatically declined and offered to the next student on the waitlist. When an application is declined, either by the parent or the system, it is not possible to re-offer the seat. A parent may request the application be reopened and placed on the waiting list.

  • Yes, per school board policy, transfers can be revoked if:

    1. The student shows a pattern of violating school rules and regulations.
    2. The student does not meet specific written conditions of the request.
    3. The information on the request form is falsified,
    4. The student has irregular attendance or chronic tardiness.

  • If you are offered a seat and fail to login and accept:

    Parents must accept an offered seat within 7 calendar days of the notification or the seat will be automatically declined and offered to the next student on the waitlist. When a request form is declined, either by the parent or the system, it is not possible to re-offer the seat. A parent may ask for the request form to be reopened and the student be placed back on the waiting list.  The student will be placed within their priority section on the list.

    If you accepted an offered seat but then enroll in a neighborhood school:

    If you accept a school choice seat and then enroll in your neighborhood school, you will be removed from the school choice offered list when enrollment is verified with your neighborhood school.  This verification typically happens the first few weeks of school. When a request form is declined it is not possible to re-offer the seat. A parent may ask for the request form to be reopened and the student be placed back on the waiting list.  The student will be placed within their priority section on the list.

    If you accepted an offered seat but delayed enrollment:

    If you accept a school choice seat and then delay enrollment, your student’s seat will only be valid for 30 days after the first day of the school year. If you were offered a seat after the start of the school year, the seat will expire 30 days after it was offered. When a request form is declined by the system, it is not possible to re-offer the seat. A parent may ask for the request form to be reopened and the student be placed back on the waiting list.  The student will be placed within their priority section on the list.

  • Parents are notified of lottery results by email, text message, or both shortly after the lottery is conducted. Notification is based on what the parent selected in the account creation process.  Parents also may check the results and their student’s status at any time by logging into their account at 4jschoolchoice.schoolmint.com. There are occasional reports that a parent did not receive an email notification and it is most often due to the parent’s email system filtering into junk/spam folder or the email filter needing to be adjusted to allow email from schoolchoice@4j.lane.edu 

  • A school choice transfer is valid until the student completes that school level.  At transition grades to another school level (5th and 8th grades) another school choice request will need to be made to continue to the next school level (middle or high school).  If you have a seat at a 4J school and live outside the district boundary, not all schools accept out of district requests and it may not be possible for your student to continue to the next school level.
    There are two exceptions to this transition grade rule:

    • If your student has a seat with Family School.  Students will transition to Arts and Technology Academy for grade 6-8 and no school choice is needed at the middle school transition.  School choice would be needed at the end of 8th grade if you want your student to continue onto Churchill High School and it is not your neighborhood school.
    • If your student has a seat with one of our K-12 language immersion programs.  Students transition to the next school level as part of the immersion program and no school choice is needed at those transition grades.

  • If a student is disenrolled/unenrolled in any choice school, including the language immersion or IHS programs, then the student will lose their school choice seat and a parent/guardian must complete and submit a new school choice transfer request form.  Another school choice transfer offer must be made by the district and accepted by the parent/guardian for the student to return to their previous choice school.

    Without a school choice transfer, a parent/guardian must enroll their student in the school in the district or attendance area in which the custodial parent/guardian reside.

    Estudiante que regresa: Esta prioridad es para un estudiante que asiste a la escuela durante el año escolar actual y solicita continuar matriculado en la escuela el próximo año escolar.

    Hermanos matriculados conjuntamente: Esta prioridad es para los hermanos de estudiantes que actualmente asisten a una escuela y continuarían asistiendo a la misma escuela durante el próximo año escolar con el estudiante solicitante.   • No. Las solicitudes se otorgan en un orden determinado por sorteo. Todas las solicitudes elegibles recibidas en el período de solicitud apropiado se incluirán en la lotería. Recomendamos completar su solicitud mucho antes de la fecha límite, para que tenga tiempo de resolver cualquier pregunta o dificultad técnica.

    Las solicitudes posteriores a la lotería se acomodan por orden de llegada según haya espacio disponible y se colocan en las listas de espera de la escuela en el orden en que se reciben dentro de las áreas prioritarias.

  • Sí, debe completar una solicitud de elección de escuela por separado para cada estudiante. El 4J hace todo lo posible para mantener a los hermanos conectados en las escuelas. Sin embargo, solo la escuela de su vecindario puede garantizar la matrícula conjunta para los hermanos.

    Si tiene gemelos, debe completar una solicitud para cada estudiante, pero tiene la opción de ingresarlos a la lotería juntos o por separado. Se proporciona más información en las instrucciones de la solicitud.

  • Presentar una solicitud por cada alumno. Puede solicitar una, dos o tres escuelas como máximo. No incluya la escuela de su vecindario ni ninguna escuela chárter entre sus tres opciones. Se le pedirá que clasifique sus opciones (1,2,3). Una vez que se le haya ofrecido y aceptado un espacio en una escuela, el nombre de su estudiante se retirará de las listas de las escuelas de menor rango, pero permanecerá en la lista de espera para las escuelas de mayor rango.

  • Residentes y no residentes cuya solicitud no fue atendida: SI. Las listas de espera de la escuela no se transfieren al año siguiente. Si a su estudiante no se le ofrece la matrícula en una escuela para un año determinado, y aún desea matricularse en esa escuela, deberá volver a presentar la solicitud el año siguiente.

    Residentes del distrito que se mudaron: SI. Si su estudiante asiste a la escuela de su vecindario y usted se mudó fuera de los límites de la escuela, o si su estudiante asiste a una escuela 4J como residente y usted se mudó fuera del distrito, puede completar el año escolar. Para volver a matricularse para el siguiente año escolar, deberá solicitar una transferencia. Los estudiantes que regresan tienen la primera prioridad para la matrícula entre los residentes del distrito y entre los no residentes.

    Residentes del distrito inscritos en una transferencia de elección de escuela y que permanecen en la misma escuela: NO. Una vez que un estudiante residente se haya matriculado en una escuela del 4J a través de la elección de escuela, la transferencia seguirá siendo válida hasta que el estudiante complete ese nivel escolar (primaria, secundaria, preparatoria) o se mude fuera de los límites del distrito escolar.

    Cambio de escuela de residentes y no residentes: SI. Al cambiar de nivel escolar (de la escuela primaria a la preparatoria o de la preparatoria a la preparatoria), los estudiantes deben presentar una solicitud de elección de escuela o de transferencia si la nueva escuela a la que desean asistir no es la escuela de su vecindario. (La excepción son los estudiantes que continúan en un programa de inmersión en el idioma K-12, quienes no necesitan presentar una solicitud). Los estudiantes que asistieron a una escuela primaria o secundaria del vecindario a través de la elección de escuela no tienen ninguna prioridad para asistir a la escuela secundaria o preparatoria de ese vecindario. 

    No residentes matriculados con un transferencia interdistrital temporal: SI. Si su estudiante se mudó del Distrito Escolar de Eugene a mitad de año y se le otorgó una transferencia temporal para permanecer inscrito en su escuela, debe solicitar una transferencia entre distritos para el año siguiente a fin de permanecer inscrito en el 4J.

    No residentes inscritos con una transferencia regular y que permanecen en la misma escuela: NO. Si su estudiante se inscribió en una escuela 4J en una transferencia interdistrital no temporal, o se inscribió en 2018 o antes en una transferencia de “matrícula abierta”, la transferencia seguirá siendo válida hasta que el estudiante complete ese nivel escolar. Los estudiantes deberán presentar una nueva solicitud de transferencia cuando cambien de nivel escolar de primaria a secundaria o de secundaria a preparatoria (excepto los programas de inmersión lingüística).

    No residentes inscritos con una transferencia regular y que quieren cambiar escuelas: SI. Si su estudiante se inscribió en una escuela 4J en una transferencia interdistrital, o antes en una transferencia de “matrícula abierta”, y quieren cambiar escuelas (por ejemplo cuando cambien de nivel escolar de primaria a secundaria o de secundaria a preparatoria), debe presentar una nueva solicitud de transferencia para elegir una escuela nueva por el proceso de transferencias para no residentes. Estos estudiantes tienen prioridad sobre los estudiantes que actualmente no están inscritos en el distrito. Los estudiantes que asistieron a una escuela primaria o secundaria a través de una transferencia no tienen inscripción automática ni ninguna prioridad para asistir a la escuela secundaria o preparatoria de ese vecindario.     Inmersión en el idioma: NO.   • La lotería no determina si hay un espacio para su estudiante en una escuela. La lotería determina el orden en que se ofrecen los espacios disponibles a los estudiantes y los estudiantes restantes se colocan en la lista de espera de la escuela.

  • Si hay un espacio para que su estudiante se inscriba en una escuela que usted solicitó, se le notificará por correo electrónico. Tenga en cuenta que esto puede ser poco después de que se realice la lotería, o puede ser días, semanas o meses después. Los padres también pueden verificar el estado de su estudiante en cualquier momento a través de su cuenta en 4jschoolchoice.schoolmint.com. Si recibe una oferta para matricularse, se le indicará que vaya al panel de control de su cuenta en 4jschoolchoice.schoolmint.com para aceptar o rechazar el espacio.

    IMPORTANTE: Los padres deben aceptar un asiento ofrecido dentro de los 7 días calendario posteriores a la notificación por correo electrónico o el asiento se rechazará automáticamente y se ofrecerá al siguiente estudiante en la lista de espera. Cuando se rechaza una solicitud, ya sea por parte de los padres o del sistema, no es posible volver a ofrecer el asiento. Un padre puede solicitar que se vuelva a abrir la solicitud y se coloque en la lista de espera.

  • Sí, según la política de la junta escolar, las transferencias se pueden revocar en el caso de que:

    1. El estudiante muestre un patrón de violación de las normas y reglamentos escolares.
    2. La información en el formulario de solicitud era falsa,
    3. El estudiante tenga asistencia irregular o tardanzas crónicas.

  • Si le ofrecen un espacio y no inicia sesión y acepta:
    Los padres deben aceptar el espacio ofrecido dentro de los 7 días laborales posteriores a la notificación o el espacio será automáticamente rechazado y ofrecido al siguiente estudiante en la lista de espera. Cuando un formulario de solicitud es rechazado, ya sea por el padre o el sistema, no es posible volver a ofrecer el espacio. Un padre puede solicitar de nuevo. Se reabrirá el formulario y se colocará al estudiante nuevamente en la lista de espera. El estudiante será colocado dentro de su sección de prioridad en la lista.

    Si aceptó el espacio ofrecido pero luego se matriculó en una escuela de su vecindario:
    Si acepta un espacio de elección de escuela y luego se matricula en la escuela de su vecindario, su estudiante será eliminado de la lista de opciones de escuela ofrecidas cuando la matrícula se verifique con la escuela de su vecindario. Esta verificación normalmente ocurre durante las primeras semanas de clases. Cuando un formulario de solicitud es rechazado no es posible volver a ofrecer el espacio. Un padre puede volver a solicitar con el formulario y el estudiante volverá a estar en la lista de espera. El estudiante será colocado dentro de su sección de prioridad en la lista.

    Si aceptó un espacio ofrecido pero retrasó la matrícula:
    Si acepta un espacio de elección de escuela y luego retrasa la matrícula, el espacio de su estudiante solo será válido durante 30 días después del primer día del año escolar. Si a ustedes se les ofreció un espacio después del inicio del año escolar, el espacio caducará 30 días después de su oferta. Cuando el sistema rechaza un formulario de solicitud, no es posible volver a ofrecer el espacio. Un padre puede volver a solicitar con el formulario de solicitud cuando sea reabierto y el estudiante será colocado nuevamente en la lista de espera. El estudiante será colocado dentro de su sección de prioridad en la lista.
     

  • Una transferencia de elección de escuela es válida hasta que el estudiante complete ese nivel escolar. En los grados de transición a otro nivel escolar (grados 5to y 8vo), será necesario realizar otra solicitud de elección de escuela para continuar al siguiente nivel escolar (escuela secundaria o preparatoria). Si tiene un cupo en una escuela 4J y vive fuera de los límites del distrito, no todas las escuelas aceptan solicitudes fuera del distrito y es posible que su estudiante no pueda continuar al siguiente nivel escolar.

     

    Hay dos excepciones a esta regla de calificación de transición:

    • Si su estudiante tiene un asiento en Family School. Los estudiantes harán la transición a la Academia de Artes y Tecnología para los grados 6to a 8vo y no se necesita elección de escuela en la transición a la escuela secundaria. La elección de escuela sería necesaria al final de 8vo grado si desea que su estudiante continúe en la Preparatoria Churchill y no es la escuela de tu vecindario.
    • Si su estudiante tiene un asiento en uno de nuestros programas de inmersión lingüística K-12. Los estudiantes hacen la transición al siguiente nivel escolar como parte del programa de inmersión y no se necesita elección de escuela en esos grados de transición.
