International Exchange Program

Eugene School District 4J collaborates with CSIET approved organizations to provide an educational and cultural experience to students wishing to attend public high school for up to one school year.  4J strives to adhere to the recommendations set forth in the Model School Policy by the Council on Standards for International Educational Travel (CSIET). As per the Model School Policy as set forth by CSIET, international exchange students have all rights and privileges accorded to community students—except the right to a diploma.

2021-2022 International Student Enrollment Information

SCHOOL START DATE – The 4J Middle & High School Calendar 2021-2022 is available at www.4j.lane.edu/calendars/2021/secondary2021/

ENROLLMENT INFORMATION – Contact the high school registrar when the student arrives in Eugene to complete enrollment. The student must be available in-person to complete enrollment and course registration, and provide additional information or attend an enrollment appointment at the high school as requested. Enrollment forms are available at the 4J enrollment website at www.4j.lane.edu/student-enrollment/. The enrollment forms will require assistance from either the host family or local area representative and may be completed in in advance of arrival in country.
HOST FAMILY CONTACT and ADDRESS INFORMATION – For the health and safety of our students, immediately notify the high school registrar and 4J international Exchange Program of any changes to the information contained on the accepted student’s 4J International Student Application Form; specifically, if a student is moved to a unlisted host family or of any change to contact information for the Exchange Program Local Representative.

Important Dates

Applications are accepted annually for international exchange students. Applications must include the Eugene School District 4J application form in addition to forms required by a sponsoring organization.

  • April 1: International student application available for download.
  • April 15 – July 15: Completed applications must be submitted in original printed format to the 4J International Exchange Program at the Eugene School District Education Center, 200 North Monroe Street, Eugene OR 97402.

Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Completed applications are reviewed in order of date and time of submission.

Completed applications must be submitted in original printed format to the 4J International Exchange Program, Eugene School District 4J, 200 North Monroe Street, Eugene OR 97402. The front desk at the 4J Education Center will receive applications and date/time stamp receipt. In addition, an emailed copy of the application materials is strongly encouraged to schoolchoice@4j.lane.edu.  ** The 4J Education Center is currently closed to visitors until further notice. A mail slot at the front entrance is available to drop off completed applications.**

Applications are screened for completion and compliance with rules and procedures (administrative rules) prior to review. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Completed applications are reviewed in order of date and time of submission.

The student or sponsoring international student organization representative should confirm that the application fulfills the Checklist for 4J International Student Applicants:

  • 4J International Student Application Form, original with all requested signatures
  • Student transcript (in English)
  • Personal statement (Why do you want to spend a year abroad?)
  • English language proficiency test score(s) (ELTiS, SLEP, TOEFL, or IELTS)
  • Medical examination and immunization records (including TB certificate or other documentation as required by local US embassy or consulate in the country of citizenship or permanent residence

Students or sponsoring international student organization representatives will be notified by email of application receipt and completion status immediately and program acceptance status within the following two weeks.

F-1 Visa and I-20 Forms

Tuition-paying students applying with an F-1 visa must submit a completed application and other pertinent information directly to the Eugene School District. An I-20 form will be issued only to tuition paying students after they have been accepted by the 4J International Exchange Program and the school principal. Tuition for these students must be paid in advance to the I-20 being issued. For more information, please contact schoolchoice@4j.lane.edu

* Note: F-1 visa students, please contact schoolchoice@4J.lane.edu prior to submitting a 2021-2022 4J International Student Exchange Program Application. The Eugene School District 4J is not accepting requests for F-1 visa students for 2021-2022 school year.  Please monitor this site for updates.
