Free Weekly COVID-19 Testing Available

Sign up for optional weekly testing using take-home saliva test

Eugene School District 4J is pleased to partner with the Oregon Health Authority and the University of Oregon to provide free COVID-19 testing to all 4J students during the 2021–22 school year.

The program offers voluntary weekly screening testing for students in grades K–12 via a take-home saliva test. This is an optional program, so interested students must opt-in by completing the following steps:

Step 1: Register your student at tinyurl.com/k12covidtesting

Step 2: Print, fill out and return the completed consent form to your school. If you are unable to print the form, please contact your school for assistance.
• Ages 5-14: tinyurl.com/OHAconsent5-14
• Ages 15-18: tinyurl.com/OHAconsent

Here’s how the program works: Each week, your child’s school will distribute collection kits to registered students that they take home. A sample of the student’s saliva using the kit is collected at home and then returned to the school on a designated day. The school forwards the students’ samples to the UO lab for testing.

Test results are made available to students and families using a secure online portal, typically one to two days after the tests are returned to the school. Schools will not receive the test results and only will be notified if there is a positive case.

Staff Testing

Weekly screening testing for K–12 teachers and staff also is available, with free weekly at-home testing by mail through a different OHA program. 4J staff members who are not yet fully vaccinated have been directed to participate. (All staff and volunteers are required to be fully vaccinated by October 18.)

About Screening Testing

Screening testing is a public health measure that supports detection of COVID-19 and prevention against its spread.

Public health officials currently recommend routine screening testing only for people who are unvaccinated or only partially vaccinated. Because COVID-19 vaccines are very effective in reducing the risk of infection, the likelihood of a fully vaccinated person contracting COVID-19, while possible, is very low compared with those unvaccinated. However, all students and staff may participate in screening testing.

The Oregon Health Authority is funding the testing program through a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Health and Safety Measures

4J is committed to the health and safety of all its students and staff. Supporting free screening testing for students and staff is just one way the district is working to prevent the spread of COVID-19 as students prepare to return to full-time, in-person instruction starting next week. Other important health and safety protocols include:

  • Face masks required indoors for all students and staff
  • Vaccination required for staff and volunteers by October 18, 2021
  • Physical distancing of 3 feet to the extent possible
  • Ventilation upgrades, including bipolar ionization air purifying units installed in all schools’ HVAC systems
  • Routine cleaning of high-touch surfaces
  • Frequent handwashing
