Gilham Elementary Construction Begins

Phase 2 of planned school expansion and improvements is underway

Design details have been completed and preliminary construction has started on phase 2 of Gilham Elementary School’s planned school expansion.

The design team, GMA Architects, has completed the design of the new phase of planned improvements for the school, meeting district standards and reflecting the school’s master plan which was developed with extensive staff and community participation. The design documents were submitted to the City of Eugene for building permit review and approval, bringing the second phase of the school’s expansion one step closer to reality.

Originally constructed in 1966, Gilham has needed multiple additions and facility improvements throughout the years to keep up with the growing Sheldon region. To map the route forward, the district hired GMA Architects to develop a master plan for Gilham that identified existing facility deficiencies, future growth potential, and alignment with district standards. The resulting master plan identified numerous needed improvements throughout the facility that would require a phased approach in order to complete the work.

The first round of improvements at Gilham, completed in 2016 with funds from the 2013 bond measure, included enhanced safety features, renovated classrooms and office, added restrooms, outdoor breezeway converted to an interior hallway, STEAM lab (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics), community room, two new small-group learning spaces and a new, more centrally located counseling office.

The second round of planned improvements, funded by the 2018 school bond measure, is underway now. The improvements are focused on growing and enhancing the school facility by adding four general classrooms, providing for renovated special education classrooms, adding security fencing, upgrading some existing classrooms and converting the covered play area to an enclosed auxiliary gym.

Preliminary work has started at the rear of the school and construction is underway with a fall 2022 completion date. Some work will need to continue after the start of the 2021–22 school year due to the extent of construction required. The district will work with the design team and contractor to schedule work to minimize disruption to the school.

A few select design and building renderings for the planned school expansion are shared below. While renderings help envision and understand a design’s team vision, these images are speculative and the final constructed building may see some minor cosmetic differences.
