Face Coverings Lifted for Outdoor Activities

Effective June 30, students and staff may remove face masks when outdoors

Following state announcements about some changing requirements, 4J is clarifying current expectations for students and staff participating in summer programs and summer work.

Governor Brown announced on Friday that the county risk level framework and many state-level mandates for COVID-19 prevention would be rescinded effective June 30, 2021. She also stated that decision-making regarding guidelines for K–12 schools would be returned to the Oregon Department of Education and Oregon Health Authority, with local school districts ultimately making final determinations for the implementation of those guidelines.

Shortly after the Governor’s announcement on Friday, ODE released its new Ready Schools Safe Learners Resiliency Framework for the 2021–22 School Year, which school districts may also apply to summer school programs.

Eugene School District 4J is digging into the changes in the new resiliency framework, consulting with Lane County Public Health, and discussing with other partners including the Oregon Department of Education.

The district is implementing one immediate change in the meantime, as of Wed., June 30:

  • When outdoors, staff and students are not required to wear face coverings, regardless of vaccination status.

At this time, other provisions remain the same:

  • Students are required to wear face coverings indoors.
  • Staff are required to wear face coverings indoors when students are present.
  • Staff who have been verified to be fully vaccinated may remove face coverings indoors when students are not present.
  • Staff and students may choose to wear face coverings in situations where they are not required.

Updates will be provided about any other changes in protocols that are decided for the summer months.

Additional guidance coming from ODE in late July also will inform expectations for fall 2021.
