Free Youth Meals Shift to Weekly Pickup

Weekly meal box pickup begins May 5 at seven sites

Starting next month, Eugene School District 4J will offer free grab-and-go meal boxes for 4J students and other youth every Wednesday. No application or pre-registration is required. Home delivery will no longer be provided.

Weekly pickup of youth meal boxes will begin on Wednesday, May 5. Meal boxes can be picked up between 12:45–2:15 p.m. at seven middle schools across the district (all 4J middle schools except Arts & Technology Academy).

Whereas the weekly delivery was a food box, the weekly pickup will feature “heat and eat” meals. Each box will contain four days of breakfasts and lunches, plus five dinner meals.

Free meals are provided for all 4J students and youth up to age 18. There are no income requirements and families can pick up meals at any location. Vegetarian, made-without-gluten, and soy milk options are available.

Families who are not able to pick up a meal box at the scheduled time can email 4jmeals@4j.lane.edu and request to pick up a meal box at the district office or make other arrangements.

Since March 2020, the district has provided more than 1.7 million free nutritious meals to 4J students and youth 18 years and younger. The district began providing free grab-and-go meals at multiple school sites across the district in March 2020 when the coronavirus pandemic forced the closure of school buildings. The district then expanded the free meal program, adding a home delivery option in October 2020, before shifting to delivery-only last month when students returned to school buildings.

In April, as schools geared up to feed students returning to school buildings in the hybrid learning model, the district shifted from providing daily meal pickup and delivery to weekly food boxes delivered by bus drivers. Starting in May, bus drivers will be occupied five days a week and will no longer be able to deliver meals, but weekly meal boxes will be available for pickup.

Free school meals for all will continue to be available through the summer and the 2021–22 school year.
