Cydney Vandercar to serve as district leader through 2021–22 school year

Interim Superintendent Cydney Vandercar will continue to lead Eugene School District 4J through the 2021–22 school year.

Ms. Vandercar grew up in Lane County and has been an educator and education leader in Eugene School District 4J for nearly 30 years. She has worked in all four of the district’s regions, starting in 1992 as a substitute teacher, then as a math teacher for several years, before becoming a school administrator. She served as an assistant principal at South Eugene High School, principal at Spencer Butte and Cal Young middle schools, teacher workforce administrator, human resources director, and assistant superintendent, before being named interim superintendent. She holds a master’s degree in math education.

Ms. Vandercar is the district’s 24th superintendent and only the second woman to serve in that role in the 166 years since the district was founded in 1854.

On May 6, the board appointed Ms. Vandercar, then the district’s Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services, to serve in the district’s top job through the 2020–21 school year. She succeeded former superintendent Gustavo Balderas, who had accepted the superintendency of a larger school district near Seattle.

The board in August started the process to choose an executive search firm to assist with the process to recruit and hire a permanent superintendent, but on Oct. 21, the board voted unanimously to cancel the search firm selection process. Board members agreed conducting an intensive superintendent recruitment and selection process now would be uniquely difficult due to the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic and would take time and attention away from navigating the district through the challenges posed by the pandemic.

The board voted unanimously at its Nov. 4 meeting to extend Ms. Vandercar’s contract for a second year, pending board approval at its upcoming meeting of the amended contract. Ms. Vandercar’s interim superintendent appointment will be extended through June 2022.

The superintendent is 4J’s chief executive officer, leading all the district’s programs, proposing and implementing long-range plans, and implementing policies set by the elected seven-member school board. She is ultimately responsible for all areas of the district’s operation, providing executive leadership and administrative direction for all schools, departments and services.
