Free Meals For All Until December

Grab-and-go meals available free for all youth at more sites, more hours this fall

Free grab-and-go meal distribution is back, with more locations and longer hours to ensure all 4J students and youth 18 and younger have convenient access to nutritious food.

Starting Monday, September 21, meals will be available for pickup at 10 school locations with extended hours, 10:45 a.m.–2 p.m. The longer serving times will provide students and families greater flexibility to pick up meals at a time that works with their online school schedules.

Grab-and-go meal bags include both breakfast and lunch, including hot options most days.

The free meals are available to all 4J students and youth 18 years old and younger, and families can choose the location that is most convenient for them, regardless of where they live or attend school. There are no income requirements and no application necessary. Children do not need to be present when picking up meals.

The district also is preparing to add some limited delivery routes soon for families who do not have a way to get to pickup sites.

Meal service was originally planned to begin with the start of the school year on Monday, Sept. 14, but both school and meal service were postponed due to the impacts of hazardous air quality from wildfire smoke.

The district is able to offer school meals free for all students and youth at least until December 2020. The USDA has extended the temporary program waivers that make it possible for schools to offer meals at no charge through the end of the calendar year, or until available federal funds run out.
