Team Chosen for Gilham Elementary School Expansion

Experienced local construction contractor and architect firm will plan and build school expansion

Planning for the Gilham Elementary School expansion is underway, with a construction manager/general contractor (CM/GC) and project architect now on board.

GMA Architects, the architecture firm chosen to design the building upgrades at Gilham, has extensive local experience including knowledge and experience of the Gilham project. GMA completed the master planning for improvements at Gilham in 2014–15, and designed the first phase of Gilham improvements that was completed in 2016 with funds from the 2013 bond measure. The firm in recent years also designed the major renovation of another 4J school in the Sheldon region, Willagillespie Elementary School.

Chambers Construction, a local construction company founded in 1955, will coordinate the planning and construction of the school expansion alongside GMA Architects. Chambers Construction’s past projects include building three 4J elementary schools, River Road/El Camino del Río Elementary School, Bertha Holt Elementary School and Cesar Chávez Elementary School; Oakway Heritage Courtyard and Oakway Center Hyatt Place Hotel; and the Moshofsky Center at Autzen Stadium.

Both companies’ proposals were ranked highest by the selection committee after a review of proposals from several firms and interviews with top candidates. Contract negotiations were completed successfully and the school board in August approved awarding the contracts to the selected CM/GC and architect teams.

The district, the architect team, and the construction manager/general contractor will work as a team throughout the design and construction process with subcontractors selected through a publicly advertised, competitive solicitation process.

CM/GCs are brought on early in the design process so that the firm can work with the architects and the district to analyze building systems, provide cost estimates, develop construction schedules, plan for the anticipated months of construction, and help ensure that the school expansion project will be completed on time and within budget.

The 2013 bond measure funded Gilham Elementary School’s master planning process and the first phase of planned improvements. The community-approved 2018 bond measure will fund phase two of the master plan, enclosing the covered play area to add gym space and adding classrooms to accommodate the region’s growing population.
