North Eugene High School Design Comes Into Focus

Architects present design of new high school building—the area’s first in more than 50 years

The new North Eugene High School is one step closer to reality, thanks to voters’ approval of the 2018 school bond measure and design work by the team of Rowell Brokaw Architects and Opsis Architecture. The design team has presented its preliminary design for the first new high school building to be constructed in the Eugene–Springfield area in more than 50 years.

The design is informed by educational design specifications and input from school staff, families, neighbors and other community members, including a design open house held in January.  The architects reviewed districtwide visioning and planning documents and engaged public input to identify community priorities and solicit feedback.

Responsive to this community input and design specifications, the architects have created a high school design with two stories and an enclosed courtyard. The design emphasizes a centralized building layout to strengthen school community and aid in wayfinding and security; safe and clear site circulation; usable quality outdoor space; and minimizing impact to neighbors and serving as a positive community asset.

Now at the halfway point of the design development phase for the building, the design team had planned to hold another community open house to share the design update and invite community feedback. The planned in-person event cannot be held due to the coronavirus pandemic, so the update is being provided virtually instead. The design and building renderings have been presented in a school board meeting and shared with school staff, families and the public. (Please note, while renderings help envision and understand a design’s team vision, renderings are speculative and the final constructed building may see some minor cosmetic differences.)

Any comments on the presented school design are invited to be shared via an online form by Sunday, May 31: surveymonkey.com/r/NEHSDesign

After completion of the detailed design, construction documents and permitting, construction of the new building will begin in 2021 to be completed by summer 2023. The new high school will be a high-quality learning environment and community asset now and for generations to come.
