Interim Superintendent Finalist Announced

School board names current assistant superintendent as finalist candidate

Cydney VandercarThe Eugene School Board has named Cydney Vandercar as the finalist candidate to be interim superintendent of Eugene School District 4J for the 2020–21 school year. Ms. Vandercar currently serves as the district’s Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services. The board will vote on approval of Ms. Vandercar’s appointment in the regular board meeting on Wednesday, May 6.

“Ms. Vandercar has a long history with the 4J district starting her career as a substitute teacher and moving up through instruction, administration and operations. The depth of her understanding of our district and her caring for our kids, educators, staff and community will be a stable force as we enter this year of change and opportunity,” says school board chair Anne Marie Levis. “We are fortunate to have had the opportunity to consider a number of qualified candidates who are all exceptional educators and leaders, and have identified Ms. Vandercar as the finalist to take on this one-year interim role.”

Ms. Vandercar grew up in Lane County and has been an educator and education leader in Eugene School District 4J for nearly 30 years, starting in 1992 as a substitute teacher, then as a math teacher for several years, followed by administrator positions as South Eugene High School assistant principal, Spencer Butte Middle School principal, Cal Young Middle School principal, teacher workforce administrator, and Human Resources Director, to her current role as Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services, in which she currently oversees Finance, Human Resources, Nutrition Services and Public Safety.

Her recent experience includes pandemic response leadership, bringing the district’s school meal program in-house, collective bargaining, and bond planning. She holds a master’s degree in math education.

Pending approval by the school board, Ms. Vandercar will be the second woman to serve as superintendent in the 166 years since the district was founded in 1854.

Superintendent Gustavo Balderas, who has led the district for the past five years, will depart in June to be superintendent of a larger school district near Seattle. The school board unanimously approved undertaking a hiring process for an interim superintendent considering internal candidates and a timeline that provided opportunities for feedback from 4J’s three employee associations.

The board also unanimously approved the desired candidate profile, a list of preferred characteristics and qualifications for the interim superintendent to guide the board’s selection process. The board revised the initial draft to reflect input from about 200 parents, staff and community members.
