School Board Narrows Options for School Rebuilding Plan

Join us April 10 to discuss options for Camas Ridge and Edison Elementary School construction

Thanks to voters who overwhelmingly approved 4J’s 2018 bond measure, planning for new school buildings is getting underway. This requires some critical decisions to be made soon about how, where and when to rebuild and house students during construction of Camas Ridge and Edison Elementary Schools.

After exploring possibilities and seeking community input on a wide range of reconstruction options, the school board held a work session on April 3, 2019, and developed a consensus on which options to move forward for further consideration.

School construction plan possibilities under consideration include:

• Construction of a temporary school location at the Willard site, to house students while the new Edison and Camas Ridge school buildings are constructed. Possibilities for temporary school space include purchasing or leasing portable classrooms, erecting a durable pre-fabricated building, or a combination of the two, along with renovating the existing Willard gym. These options would house schools during construction and some options would provide space for other district programs after construction is completed. There are varying costs for each option.

• Which school to build first, Edison or Camas Ridge. If a temporary school location is erected at the Willard site, construction may either begin with Edison followed by Camas Ridge, or begin with Camas Ridge followed by Edison.

Previously discussed options no longer under consideration include:

• Constructing the new Camas Ridge building on the former Willard school site at 29th & Lincoln, a mile to the west.

• Constructing the new Camas Ridge Elementary School building on the lower end of the Camas Ridge site. and temporarily co-locating Edison in the former Camas Ridge building during Edison construction.

• Constructing a temporary school location on the Camas Ridge site, to house Camas Ridge and Edison during construction, co-located with construction of the new Camas Ridge.
