Opening: Susan Castillio, Oregon State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and Richard Laine, Director of Education Programs, The Wallace Foundation

Susan Castillo encouraged collaborative leadership in order to solve the achievement gap with minority students.

Richard Laine stressed leadership to find "true north," and blaze new trails focus on improving student learning.

Keynote: "Leadership Toward Student Achievement," Pedro Noguera, Judith K. Kimon Professor of Communities and Schools, Harvard Graduate School of Education

Pedro Noguera stated that educators have to speak up and change what we're doing so we reach all students.

"Evaluation Tools for Instructional Leaders," Eugene School District 4J, Hartford Public Schools."

 

Principal, Laurie Moses, explains how the Eugene School District 4J collaboration with the University of Oregon resulted in the leadership iimprovement plan.

But learning and processing wasn't limited to theformal Case Consultation Group sessions - it also occured in spontaneous conversations.

Keynote: "Building Partnerships: How to Take Risks," Jennifer James, Urban Cultural Anthropologist and retired professor, University of Washingto

Kay Mehas, Wallace Grant Director for Eugene, introduces the keynote speaker, Jennifer James.

Jennifer James surprised the audience with her informality and insights from a cultural anthropoligist's view.

Opportunity was provided for state-district collaboration in meeting the trailblazing challenge presented at the conference. Partnership groups:

  • Illinois, Indian, Iowa
  • Oregon, Montana, Missouri
  • Rhode Island, Vermont
  • Massachusetts, New York

Representatives from Oregon, Montana, and Missouri meet to share ideas, resources and commitments.
