The second Friday in October is reserved for public school educators' professional development in the state of Oregon. This year, the Eugene School District 4J funded five local workshops for classified and certified staff, and two for administrators which are supportive of Wallace Grant Goals. These offerings were in addition to various educational workshops offered throughout the state. Below are workshop pictures and links to resources.

Lexiles | Excel | Conveners & Facilitators | Tribes | SIOP | Community Engagement

In the Lexiles workshop, groups of teachers discuss reading material options at different reading levels.

Kerri Sage, a teacher at Gilham, introduces the Lexiles resource which matches student reading level and reading materials.

[All teacher & staff workshops were held at the new Holt Elementary School.]

Debbie Sorenson shows how to create, modify, print, and format worksheets; work with basic formulas and functions, enhance worksheets; use templates, and use AutoFormats in the 1st Excel class.

Kim Ketterer, back right, is ready to assist in the 2nd Excel workshop which includes data filtering and sorting and simplifying complex data display through the use of pivot tables and charts.

Meanwhile, many teachers, like this group at Holt Elementary, work in teams to articulate curriculum across and between grades.

At the Conveners & Facilitators workshop, people reflect on questions such as: Do you have meetings that take too long? Do you have members that arrive late or leave early?

Here Eugene Cadre members Todd Hamilton and Bill Kentta provide opportunities to practice skills and dialogue with to address questions and concerns about convening and facilitating.

Do you need a few more tools to feel confident leading meetings? Here participants learn information, strategies, and tools for effective convening and facilitating.

In the Tribes workshop, Julie Sowerby teaches how to build a democratic community in their classroom, which establishes the safe learning environment necessary before any “real” learning can happen.

Handouts of the PowerPoint presentation help people keep track of concepts. For further information, see the Tribes link.

Participants will walk away from this day energized and with hands-on strategies to help build inclusion while integrating curriculum.

Across town at the new Madison Middle School, administrators learn about SIOP: Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol.

Abby Lane reviews what we know about what facilitates language learning for English as a second (or third!) language learners. Click this link for more information on SIOP.

Administrators are asked to examiine the contextual and cognitive range of communication situations students experience.

Carmen Urbina, the new district Family and Community Coordinator, reviews the goals of the project with administrators.

Administrators listen eagerly to strategies designed to engage all families in the success of their student's education.
