Student Testing Results & School Accountability
Oregon Assessment of Knowledge & Skills (OAKS) Results
The Oregon Assessment of Knowledge & Skills (OAKS) is administered annually to students in grades 3 through 8, and High School throughout districts in Oregon. The purpose of these tests is to assess district, school, and individual student progress toward meeting the Oregon Standards in Reading, Math, Science, and Writing. OAKS is administered primarily online at the following grade levels:
- Reading - Grades 3 through 8, High School
- Mathematics - Grades 3 through 8, High School
- Science - Grades 5, 8, and High School
- Writing - High School only (4th and 7th grade writing test suspended indefinitely through Legislative action due to budget cuts)
In early September, the Oregon Department of Education releases district and schoolwide OAKS scores from the previous testing year. Scores may be filtered in a number of ways by subgroups (e.g. Special Education, Race/Ethnicity, Gender, etc.) and subject. For detailed information regarding how schools and districts scored, go to http://www.ode.state.or.us/data/schoolanddistrict/testresults/reporting/pagrsurpressed.aspx. For individual student results, please contact your student's school.
School and District Report Cards
Each year in the Fall, the Oregon Department of Education releases School and District Report Cards that rate overall school and district performance. Each school receives an overall rating: Outstanding, Satisfactory, or In Need of Improvement. Overall ratings are determined by various factors including student's performance and participation on the Oregon Assessment of Knowledge & Skills (OAKS), attendance, and for high schools, graduation rates are also included. For more information on the report card criteria, and to see ratings for each school and district, go to http://www.ode.state.or.us/data/reportcard/reports.aspx. Ratings are typically made public in early October.
Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) Reports
The federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) requires the annual determination of whether schools, districts, and states have made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) toward the goal of having all students meet rigorous state academic standards by the 2013/2014 school year. Each year, academic achievement in reading and math for all students is measured against annual performance targets. For academic achievement and participation rates, the Oregon Assessment of Knowledge & Skills (OAKS) Reading and Math tests are used. Attendance rates at the elementary and middle school levels, and graduation rates at the high school level are also factored into determinations of whether or not schools and districts make AYP. In early August, the Oregon Department of Education issues preliminary AYP reports, and in early September, final AYP reports are issued. These reports are available from http://www.ode.state.or.us/data/reportcard/reports.aspx.
