The Eugene School District is preparing for
significant budget cuts, due to the worsening Oregon economy and
declining projections for tax revenues.
Budget
Committee meetings are scheduled on February 9, March 2, and March 9 at 7 p.m. at the 4J Education Center. There is time on each agenda for brief public comment.
Nearly 1,700 community members and about 1,000 staff responded to an online survey, providing input on priorities and possible budget-balancing strategies. The
survey input will be shared with the Budget Committee.
The top priorities among those responding were:
- Maintaining the teacher-to-student ratio and class sizes to the extent possible
- Literacy programs that help students who are not reading at grade level
- Intervention programs and strategies to help students succeed and to increase achievement
Budget reduction strategies that received more support among the options presented were:
- Reduce funding for athletics and other extracurricular programs
- Reduce administration and restructure the central office
- Reduce the school or work year by 2 days
- Reduce extra funding given to schools with declining enrollment
- Close and consolidate small elementary schools
