Mission Statement:

The mission of Bailey Hill Instructional Center (BHIC) is to provide a safe, healthy, and violence-free environment that encourages students to become critical thinkers and develop the skills necessary to become successful citizens in a multicultural and diverse world.

Program Description:

Bailey Hill Instructional Center was founded in 2004 to help meet the needs of at-risk students.

The program provides services to 6th through 9th grade students from the Eugene 4J and Bethel school districts. All students in the program have been referred by school district staff who felt the students’ needs were not being adequately met in their current school.

The goal of BHIC is to re-establish appropriate behavior so that students may be reintegrated into the mainstream school system. This is accomplished through an emphasis on social skills training as well as daily participation in math, reading and writing activities. School days also are shortened to three hours, with the option of either a morning session which begins at 8:30, or an afternoon session which begins at 12:30.

A respectful environment and safe space is encouraged by staff so that each student has the opportunity to obtain the best learning experience.

School Highlights

  • Social skills training is a fundamental piece of the curriculum in an effort to engage students in critical thinking regarding topics such as self-esteem and problem solving.
  • Low teacher–student ratio allows for increased individualized attention on academics, as well as the opportunity to build positive relationships.
  • Laptops are used daily to practice typing and word processing, and to engage in reading comprehension activities. Students have their own personal laptops that are kept at the school for academic use.
  • The open learning space permits close monitoring of students at all times no matter where they are located.
  • Creative outlets are encouraged with the availability of musical instruments and art supplies during the class break.
  • College interns and volunteers provide mentoring and additional academic assistance to students throughout the year. These individuals also act as role models for students by providing support and encouragement.

Referral Process:

All students enrolled at BHIC have been referred to the program for reasons such as (but not limited to) expulsion, adjudication or chronic truancy. A referral must come from 4J faculty and the student’s history and current behavior must be sufficiently assessed before being considered for enrollment. Once referred, the student will undergo an intake process where goals and concerns will be addressed.
