Oregon Leadership Network: Spring Leadership Institute 2008

"Capturing Our Collective Genius."

The Spring Leadership Institute for the Oregon Leadership Network was held April 9, 2008, at the Hilton Hotel in Eugene, Oregon. Susan Castillo, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Eugene 4J Superintendent George Russell, and Rob Larson, Oregon Leadership Network Director, welcome participants. An overview of past Institute topics and the Oregon Leadership Network District Leadership Practices from the District Quarterly Report were given. Following a brief presentation by Dr. Cheryl King from the Educational Development Center regarding the data analysis on leadership indicators for equity, administrators and teacher leaders from the nine Network school districts split up to attend one of eight presentation and discussion groups. Lunch time provided an opportunity for networking between the attendees. Then each of the topic recorders gave a short "two minute" summary of the morning discussion groups. The Institute ended with a substantive and dynamic presentation on "Adaptive Leadership" by Dr. Ron Heifetz from Harvard University.

Marsha Moyer, Director of Employee Staffing for Salem-Keizer School District, reports on how Session 1 resulted in a "make one, take one" evaluation tool activity.

Courtney Vanderstek, Assistant Executive Director of Oregon Education Association, reported on the Session 2 discussion of how to make teacher leadership changes sustainable.

Marla McGhee, Director of Educational Leadership at Lewis & CLark College, reports that their group took on the pragmatic issues of staffing for equity, funding, student progress, and what monitoring might look like.

Paul Weill, Springfield School District Curriculum Coordinator, started the session on Leadership for Literacy, K-5, by having participants find a wall quote related to literacy which they found evocative.

Tom Ruhl, Chair of the Educaton Department at Maryhurst College, recommends that participants go the the Springfield District website for staff development resources for dealing with the complexity of literacy.

Colt Gill, Superintendent of Bethel School District, begins the session on Leadership for Literacy, 6-12, by presenting his district's three tier model.

Pat Burk, Chief Policy Officer at the Oregon Department of Education, explains the network approach: systemic planning for use of resources, fostering support of other core content teachers, requirement of ongoing structure and support.

Glenn Gelbrich, Salem-Keizer Superintendent, and Salam Noor, ODE Assisstsant Superintendent for Education Improvement and Innovation, presented a "consultancy protocol" for addressing The Oregon Diploma needs.

Karen Phillips explained the performance based shift of perspective from students "doing the work," to students "demonstrating the work."

Kathy McCollum and Barry Vitcov from the Southern Oregon Educational Service District explained their comprehensive approach to staff development.

Greg McKenzie reported on the coaching of administrators in the 10 module program to deliver leadership and coaching skills.

 

 

Leaders from each school district in the Oregon Learning Network had the opportunity to further discuss the implications of the EDC research on leadership for equity.

Cheryl King congratulates Oregon leaders for seriously taking on the challenge of equity, and their courageous conversations of issues of values, beliefs, and expectations.

John Lenssen reports on their discussion of inputs, outputs, and outcomes - where are we headed, and how will this get us to equity?

Lunch provided a welcome opportunity for sharing and networking between districts.

Dr. Ron Heifetz, Harvard University researcher, was inspiring in his talk about how to build adaptive capacity in leadership, ending the institute on an energized note.
