Exchanges are for students who live outside 4J school district boundaries and want to attend a 4J school.
Exchanges are different from transfers,
which are for students who live within 4J school district boundaries
and want to attend a 4J school other than their neighborhood school.
Oregon law states that a student must attend school in the district in
which the custodial parent or legal guardian lives and cannot attend school in another school district
without paying tuition. An exchange occurs when a student in another school district (such as Bethel) wants to attend a 4J school and a student who resides in 4J's boundaries wants to attend a school in the other school district. A one-for-one exchange is made in order to avoid out-of-district tuition to either student.
Exchange requests are accepted beginning the first school day in April for the following school year. Requests received by the second Friday in May will be included in a lottery for inter-district exchanges for the following school year (May 8, 2009, is the deadline for the 2009–10 school year).
Students already attending on an exchange will be automatically renewed until they graduate; however, exchange students beginning a new school level (elementary or middle or high school) must submit a school choice request form in order to request the school they wish to attend. All school choice requests are handled on a space-available basis; students who live within the district's boundaries have priority for these spaces.
If a student moves from Eugene School District 4J to another school district after February 1, he/she may continue to attend 4J until the end of that school year but must apply for an exchange for the following school year. These requests are not considered renewals but new requests.
Exchange request forms are available at the 4J Education Center, Instruction Department, 200 North Monroe Street. Questions regarding the exchange process may be directed to the 4J Instruction Department at 541-790-7553.
