Exchanges are for students who want to attend a 4J school but whose parents live outside 4J school district boundaries. An exchange occurs when a student in our district wants to attend a school in another school district (such as Bethel) and vice versa. An exchange is made “one for one” in order to avoid out-of-district tuition to either student.
Oregon law states that a student must attend school in the district in which parents live and cannot attend school in another school district without paying tuition. Exchange requests are accepted beginning the first school day in April for the following school year. Requests are accepted from April through the end of the next school year and are processed on a “first come, first served” basis. Students already attending on an exchange are given renewal priority over new requests.
If a student moves from School District 4J to another school district after February 1 of that school year, he/she may continue to attend 4J until the end of the school year but would need to apply for an exchange for the following school year. These requests are not considered renewals but new requests. Exchanges must be renewed every year.
Exchanges are not the same as
transfers which are for students who want to attend a 4J school and whose parents live within 4J school district boundaries.
Questions regarding the exchange process should go to the 4J Instruction Department at 687-3481.
