Employee Benefits: Retirees Special Notes
Medicare
If a retiree or a retiree's insurance-eligible spouse becomes eligible for Medicare due to disability, the retiree or the retiree's spouse qualifies for Medicare supplemental coverage reimbursement. Eligibility ends the first of the month prior to the date the retiree or spouse reaches age 65. Please call the Employee Benefits Manager at (541) 790-7675 for more information.
When a retiree or his/her spouse becomes Medicare eligible the first of the month prior to the date they turn 65, or due to disability at any age, his/her eligibility for district retiree insurance coverage ends. But in the case of a retiree who becomes Medicare eligible at age 65 and who has a younger spouse or domestic partner covered under their district insurance plan, the spouse or domestic partner is eligible to remain on the district retiree coverage, on a self pay basis, until he or she becomes Medicare eligible. The process requires that an enrollment change form be completed so that the spouse or domestic partner can be assigned his/her own ID number as if they were the retiree. An ACH form also needs to be submitted so the premium payments can be withdrawn electronically from a bank account each month. Both forms should be submitted to Human Resources with a note indicating they are enrolling the younger spouse of a retiree losing eligibility (use the specific retiree's name).
Dental
Retirees have the option of waiving dental coverage while continuing medical coverage. However, it is CRITICAL you note that you may not then re-elect dental coverage at any time in the future. Election changes (e.g., waiving dental coverage) are only allowed during valid enrollment periods.
Life Insurance and Long-term Disability
Retirees are not eligible for life insurance or long-term disability coverage.
Flexible Spending Plans
Retirees are not eligible for the Flexible Spending plans.
