Welch's Harvest Grants for Teachers will award $1,000 garden packages with tools, seeds and informational materials to 100 schools to support school garden programs. Deadline is February 6. For more information see http://www2.scholastic.com/browse/article.jsp?id=3752777
The Sparkplug Foundation provides $5,000-$10,000 grants for projects in education that deal with "the whole student" and with learning as a community activity. In the past, this has included literacy projects that bring parents and kids together to learn, projects that use a neighborhood as a classroom, projects that help teachers share ideas about creative, relevant curricula, etc. All potential applicants must have their application pre-approved by calling the Sparkplug Foundation (877) 866-8285 before Friday, May 7. The Chambers Family Foundation gives grants in many areas, including education, to organizations in Lane County. Most grants to schools have been about $5,000 or less. No capital construction or environmental projects. Deadlines are in September and March. There is no website, but applications can be obtained from The Chambers Family Foundation 2295 Coburg Road, Suite 304, Eugene OR 97401, telephone: 541-484-2419. 4J applicants can also receive guidelines and an application from the 4J grants office.
The Sprint Character Education Grant Program provides grants of $500 to $5,000 to fund character education programs promoting character education curriculum and character education teacher training, direct project related costs for community service/service learning programs, leadership and mentor training. Grants will purchase resource materials, supplies, training and equipment. The Sprint Character Education Grant Program will award individual school grants up $5,000 and school district grants up to $25,000. The Wayne Morse Center in Eugene provides $2,000 to $10,000 for educational events held in 2010-11, including classes, workshops, and conferences. The Mountaineers Foundation provides grants of up to $5,000 to promote the study of the mountains, forests and streams of the Pacific Northwest. Lowes Toolbox for Education grants will provide up to $5,000 to at least 100 K-12 schools for school improvements such as outdoor classrooms, reading gardens or playgrounds. Grants are reviewed three times per year. The deadline for submitting applications for this grant cycle is February 12, 2010. However, if 1500 applications are received before the application deadline, then the application process will close. The Toyota TAPESTRY Grant Program will award 50 grants of up to $10,000 each and 20 "mini-grants" of $2,500 to K-12 teachers of science. Deadline will be January 18, 2010. The Intel Schools of Distinction Award will award six awards of $10,000 each and one of $15,000 (plus additional substantial products and services) to schools that are outstanding in teaching math or science. Applications must be submitted for the initial round of judging by no later than February 17, 2010. Tony Hawk Foundation provides grants from $1,000 to $25,00 to organizations wishing to build a community skate-park in a low income neighborhood. Upcoming deadline is March 1. NEA Student Achievement Grants provide $5,000 to improve the academic achievement of students by engaging in critical thinking and problem solving that deepen knowledge of standards-based subject matter. The work should also improve students' habits of inquiry, self-directed learning, and critical reflection. Preference is given to NEA members and teachers of economically disadvantaged students. J-Lab Grants. The Institute for Interactive Journalism provides up to $17,000 to launch new community news ventures. Funding is available for start-up news initiatives only. Ongoing efforts are not eligible to apply unless they are proposing a new venture. Successful applicants will: (1) Benefit a defined geographic or special-interest community and (2) Foster an open exchange of journalistically sound ideas, information, news and opinion in those communities. Teacher and Administrator Opportunities
The Japan-U.S. Teacher Exchange Program for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) will provide up to 48 U.S. teachers and administrators with the opportunity to travel to Japan on this fully-funded program to learn about ESD efforts and strengthen ESD curricula in both countries. Education for Sustainable Development is “a vision of education that seeks to balance human and economic well-being with cultural traditions and respect for the earth’s natural resources,” according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Student Opportunities
Get Ur Good On Grants are available for youth-led service initiatives on Global Youth Service Day, April 23-25, 2010. Available to children and youth around the world, YSA's Get Ur Good On Grants will award 100 $500 grants to support projects addressing critical community needs such as poverty, education, and environmental sustainability. The TPA Scholarship Trust provides financial aid to children or adults who suffer from hearing impairments or deafness who need assistance in obtaining assistive technology, treatment, education or other assistance related to hearing impairment. | Indirect Costs: A Critical Addition to Any Grant The Grants Office asks that all grant writers remember to include the district indirect cost (also called Overhead or Administrative Costs) in every grant (unless specifically disallowed by the funder). This tiny (most years less than 5% of direct costs) amount of the budget helps the district to administer the grant and covers district costs not specifically covered by the grant budget. Indirect costs for 2011-12 are 4.67%, so the current formula is: Method 1. Easy-step Formula (when you are beginning to plan a project and know the maximum grant allowed): 1. Total Amount of Grant offered divided by 1.0467 = Direct Costs (to Pay for Project) 2. Direct Cost X .0467 = Indirect Cost (For District Overhead) Method 2.
