Grants
Tool Factory Podcasting Grants

The State Farm/MADD Good Decision Service-Learning Grants provide $1,000 for Underage Alcohol Use Prevention or Vehicle Safety projects for youth ages 5 to 25. Teachers and school-based service-learning coordinators are eligible applicants. Applications are due by April 20. The Unsung Heroes Program awards $2,000 to 100 finalists to implement or continue a classroom project that includes innovative teaching methods, is creative, and can make a positive influence on children. First Place gets an additional $25,000; 2nd Place gets an additional $10,000; and 3rd Place receives an additional $5,000. The deadline is April 30. Student/Newspaper Partnership Grant Program
provides up to $7,500 in start-up funding and training to up to 20 new urban or rural high school or middle school student newspapers or to newspapers that are in danger of closing or have stopped publishing. ASM Materials Education Foundation
awards 10 grants of $500 each to K-12 teachers to enhance awareness of materials science and the role of materials scientists in society. Deadline is May 25. For more information and an application go to

Save Our History Grants
provide up to $10,000 to fund projects that encourage collaboration between history organizations and schools or youth groups. Eligible history organization applicants must submit the application on behalf of their partner school or schools. Three outstanding applicants will receive an additional $10,000. Microsoft Unlimited Potential Grants support community-based technology learning centers (CTLCs) in disadvantaged communities. Schools are not eligible to apply, but nonprofit organizations that offer programs that welcome the community after school at a school site are eligible. The Rite Aid Foundation
funds projects that improve the lives of Rite Aid customers and associates with a focus on health and wellness. Proposals are reviewed four times a year: January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1. For more information see http://www.riteaid.com/company/community/foundation.jsf

Challenge 20/20 brings together two schools: one from the US and one from outside the United States. Teacher-student teams from both schools work together in fall 2009 to come up with a solution to a global problem. In February, schools submit a final report of their activities and become eligible for awards. A simple online registration must be completed by August 17. Target Arts Grants
fund programs that bring the arts to schools or make it affordable for youth and families to participate in cultural experiences, such as field trips to the theater or symphony, or artists residencies and workshops. Grants generally range from $1,000 to $3,000. The Win a Wireless Lab Sweepstakes
will award five wireless labs (including HP, Lenovo, and Toshiba laptops) valued at $50,000 each. One lab will be awarded per month until May. It's a long shot, but since this is a sweepstakes rather than a grant, the entry form is easy. One entry per day per person is allowed between now and the final deadline of May 1. Note that unless the applicant "opts out," a checked box allows CDWG to send product information and provide e-mail addresses and other information about applicants to third parties. Teacher Opportunities
Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching
this year recognize outstanding mathematics and science teachers of grades 7-12. Up to 108 recipients will receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation; a paid trip for two to Washington, DC,; and gifts from sponsors of the program from around the country. Mathematics Study & Active Professionalism Grants support K-6 teachers seeking to improve their understanding of mathematics by completing course work toward an advanced degree. For 2010–2011, a program grant with a maximum of $24,000 will be awarded to one person currently teaching mathematics for at least .5FTE for at least 3 years. The applicant must be a current Full Individual or E-Member of NCTM or must teach at a school with an NCTM K–8 school membership. The application packet must be postmarked by May 9, 2009. The Thomson Gale/Library Media Connection TEAMS Award
recognizes collaboration between the teacher and media specialist to promote learning and increase student achievement. Three schools will receive awards consisting of of $2,500 cash award, approximately $500 worth of Thomson Gale products, and other prizes. Deadline is June 15. Student Opportunities
The Teens for Planet Earth Service Awards
provide recognition for teen service learning projects that impact native wildlife and show evidence of being continued into the future. All Team Members must be between the ages of 13 and 19 as of April 15. Recipients of the Gold Award will receive $1,000 to further enhance their project or education, and other recognition will be given for silver or bronze awards. Deadline is April 15. State Farm Project Ignition awards $2,000 to 25 high school students to create and produce an innovative public awareness, service-learning project promoting Teen Driver Safety. Projects may use TV, film, radio, the Internet, events/festivals, performance art, or other forms. The on-line application asks students to describe the project. The student(s) must have a teacher/advisor and principal signatures. A single Best of the Best award of $10,000 will also be awarded. Dollars for Change Grants of up to $2000 support youth-led semester-long service-learning projects that engage at least 100 youth volunteers (ages 5-25), and demonstrate youth voice and leadership in all aspects of the decision-making process. The CDC Disease Detective Camp, a free academic public health day camp held at CDC's headquarters in Atlanta, is open to upcoming high school juniors and seniors. Campers will take the role of disease detectives and probe a disease outbreak using epidemiologic and laboratory skills. Campers must provide their own accommodations and transportation. The Brower Youth Awards honor six young people ages 13-22 for outstanding activism in the fields of environmental and social justice advocacy. Each winner is awarded $3,000 and brought to San Francisco for the award week and a backcountry camping trip. The program provides ongoing access to resources, mentors, and opportunities to develop leadership skills through Earth Island Institute's New Leaders Initiative. Applications are due May 15.
