4J Elementary Report Cards - What is Expected of Teachers

The eSIS Report Card is required for each K-5 student in 4J. Any reporting to be done beyond that is permitted as long as it is approved by the building's decision-making bodies.

We are required to report twice a year and our report must clearly state whether or not the child is on track to meet benchmarks. This is true even in the case of a student who is below grade level but is working hard and progressing toward standards. While we can and should use the comments section of the report card tell the parent of such a student how well she is progressing, we must also state that the child is currently working below standard.

Although some subjectivity enters into grading, teachers are expected to use data from 4J Reading Assessments, Oregon State Assessment scores, program assessments and observations in deciding what marks to use for each skill. Use the Group and Individual Student Reports in the Data Warehouse to access scores.  In the first term, these data would be used to estimate whether, by the end of the year, the student would be expected to exceed, meet or not meet the year-end standards as set by ODE.  Term 2 marks should require less guesswork as they should be based on the student’s actual assessment results and work samples.  Each item in the Spring card should be marked “E”, “M”, or “N”.  “Y” would be used only for students enrolling in the last week or so. “*” should only be used if an insert clearly states where their child is in relation to the standard.

There are no state standards for "Effort" or the items in "Work Habits" and "Social Skills". The meaning of the marks you make in those areas are:

 Exceeds Standard

Meets Standard

 Does Not Meet

Effort consistent effort given independently effort given with minimal promptingadditional assistance required
Work Habitsconsistently, independentlywith minimal promptingadditional assistance equired
