Please join us: Thursday, Oct. 5, 5:30–7:30 p.m.

We can’t thank you enough, but we can thank you again! Please join us to celebrate the grand opening of the new River Road/El Camino del Río Elementary School building on Thursday, Oct. 5.

This fall students launched into the new school year in their modern, light-filled and colorful new building. Now it’s time to open the doors and showcase the new building to the whole community, including the bond voters who made it possible.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will start at 5:30 p.m. with brief remarks from school leaders and Mayor Lucy Vinis, plus a student performance. Between 6:00 and 7:30 p.m., community members can drop in to take an architect-led or self-guided tour of the school and explore its innovative indoor and outdoor learning spaces.

Unique dual-language immersion school

River Road/El Camino del Río Elementary School, a neighborhood elementary school with a dual language immersion program, is one of the four schools that has been replaced with 2013 bond funds. The previous school building was built in 1953 and was in poor condition. The new building opened in fall 2017.

The new school building delivers a 21st century learning environment for teachers and their students, who learn to speak, read, write and more in both Spanish and English. The light-filled, two-story structure provides ample room for classrooms and common spaces while maximizing adjacent open space for outdoor learning, play areas and athletic fields. The building is energy-efficient and costs less to operate.

The design team, PiVOT Architecture of Eugene in association with DOWA-IBI Group of Portland, worked with a staff and community design advisory committee and sought input from students, parents, staff, neighbors and the public in developing the design of the new school. Local company Chambers Construction was awarded the construction project.

Thanks to our community

We couldn’t have done it without you! Four years ago, our community came together and voted overwhelmingly to support our public schools. The successful 2013 bond measure provided funding for Eugene School District 4J to replace four aging and inefficient school buildings, improve some other facilities, and update education materials to improve teaching and learning.

River Road/El Camino de Río Elementary School is one of the four school buildings replaced thanks to our community’s support of the bond measure. A huge crowd turned out last week for the grand opening of the new Arts & Technology Academy building! The two other new school buildings funded by the 2013 bond measureRoosevelt Middle School and Howard Elementary School—opened last fall.
