Natural Helpers Websites
|
|
Natural Helpers is a program designed for school communities,
grades 6-12. It is based on the premise that when students have problems,
they often turn to their friends or other adults whom they trust for
help, and that within every school an informal "helping network"
exists. The Natural Helpers program seeks to identify this informal
network and provide training and support to students and adults who
are already serving as helpers.
Students are selected to participate in the Natural Helpers program through a school-wide survey which identifies those individuals who are naturally sought out by their peers. Because Natural Helpers represents a cross-section of all the subgroups within the school, students involved learn to see beyond social barriers and stereotypes through working together. During a two day retreat training, students begin to form a cohesive group as they learn ways of improving their helping skills. Topics covered in the initial retreat include trust and team building, enhancing listening and problem solving skills, and identifying stereotyping. Natural Helpers training also emphasizes recognizing limits as helpers and learning when it is appropriate to make referrals to other adults or professionals. Following the retreat, students return to school better prepared to help their peers as issues arise, to encourage positive norms in the school and discourage negative ones, and to contribute to a safe and supportive school environment. |

Making Connections With Kids

TEACHERS GREETING STUDENTS AT THE DOOR
WHY 1. Build Relationships 2. Recognize students who dont get recognized. 3. Find out some personal/fun things about the student. 4. To get the student to look forward to your class. 5. To show them you accept them where they are. 6. To call them by their name. 7. To make a connection with them. 8. To find some common interest you can ask them about. 9. To show them you care. 10. To show them you have missed them when they have been absent. 11. To learn some things about them that you can share. HOW 1. Maybe a certain handshake or gesture. 2. A smile and focused eyes. 3. Make sure every student gives other students a chance to greet you. No pushing through. Wait in line. 4. Recognize things that are meaningful. (smiles, frowns, and other body language) 5. Hi Juan! 6. May want to do an interest survey so you have information to mention at the door. 7. The emphasis is on personal things, versus school things. |

Sheldon High, Elk Grove Unified, California
http://www.egusd.k12.ca.us/SheldonSmedberg/students.html Student Assistance Program Components Students Helping Students Program at Sheldon (formerly Conflict Management) - students are enrolled in the first period Peer Counseling/Leadership skills course. They will be primarily working as conflict managers and peer helpers, but will also be taking on leadership roles on campus through the "Kids Can' program, peer led smoking cessation classes, "Chips for Kids" toy drive and Peer-to-Peer mentoring. Advisors: Leanne ward and Bob Baker Conflict Management at Smedberg - trains students in communication, decision making, and problem solving skills. Students work with their peers to resolve problems in area such as boyfriend/girlfriend issues, peer relationship issues, problems with parents or siblings, hostile environments, problems adjusting to a new school and conflicts resulting from any/all of the above. Advisor: Jerry Orgeron Students Reaching Out - a high school substance abuse/violence prevention program that provides outreach to fourth through eighth grade students at our feeder schools. Students are trained in age appropriate techniques for teaching elementary school students decision making and refusal skills, while also conveying topic specific information on drugs and gangs. Advisors: Chondra Schrech and Petra Pohl Friday Night Live/Club Live - students from both schools volunteer to form a chapter that promotes a "no drug or alcohol use" message. This is done in a variety of ways such as: school dances, lunch time activities, assemblies and rallies. Conferences and county-wide activities are also included. Advisors: Yuri Penermon and Taigan Velo LINK Crew and WEB Programs - the purpose of these two programs is to build connections between the upper and lower grade students in and effort to smooth the transition to a new school, as well as increasing student academic success. This is accomplished through orientation activities, as well as ongoing small group and structured activities. Advisors: Tracy Ramondini, Fern Wallace and Donna Motter Peer Mentoring Program - the Friday Night Live and Club Live programs of the Sacramento County Office of Ed. Have received a grant to pilot a mentoring program in five Sacramento County schools. Smedberg and Sheldon have been selected to participate in this program. We began this program last year. Due to our success, the mentoring grant was funded for another year. Several Sheldon students from the Peer Counseling class have been selected to be mentors to students in Smedbergs Opportunity class in need of positive role models. The students in the Opportunity class are striving to complete course requirements so they can become Sheldon students next year. The mentoring sessions will take place during first period one hour per week for ten weeks. Advisors: Yuri Peneromon and Leanne Ward TUPE and PATFY Programs - these programs are designed to focus on the prevention, intervention and cessation of tobacco use amongst all members of the student body. This is accomplished through a variety of activities in Health classes, lunch time presentations, assemblies, and programs such as "Smokeless Saturdays" and the "I Quit" smoking cessation program and OCS intervention education programs. Advisors: Leanne Ward, Donna Motter and Michelle Parsons(parent-PATFY) Counseling Department Support Groups - the counseling department offers a variety of student support groups when the need becomes apparent on campus. Support groups focus on personal awareness and skill development in support of student academic and emotional growth. All group meetings are confidential. Counseling Contacts: Dawn Leventon and Jerry Orgeron SASSI(Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory) - the SASSI is an assessment which is administered to students who have been identified as having a possible substance abuse problem. All members of the Smedberg/Sheldon Counseling Departments have been trained to administer the SASSI. This assessment is extremely beneficial in confronting the denial issues often associated with substance abuse for students and their parents, and can often assist in their initial step toward recovery. Counseling Contacts: Any counselor |

Safe School Ambassadors Model
|
|
I highly recommend the Safe School Ambassadors model
developed by Community Matters: <www.commatters.org>www.commatters.org
Iand click on the Safe School Ambassadors link). They have developed
a model for students to take action "in the moment" to create
a more respectful and tolerant school climate. This is a program but
one that is based on empowering youth with the tools they need to make
a difference EVERY day in their everyday interactions with friends at
school. The Ambassadors program was featured in the most recent issue
of Asset Magazine published by Search as a means of empowering and equiping
young people to create the climate at school. The model is designed
for middle and high school youth. It is a cutting edge yet extremely
practical model. Good luck.
