CLASSROOM SYSTEMS TRAINING, DEALING WITH DISRUPTIVE KIDS, AGENDA, Feb.2002
1. Training on classroom systems targeted ways to manage discipline. E.g.,
Using the 5,4,3,2,1 finger in hand survey at the end of a class
period to see how the students rate the class (5 is best).
2. Resources were shared that Marilyn N. has: The Tough Kid Tool Box,
The Effective Elementary Classroom, the video Defusing Anger and
Aggression, Innovations-Research to Practice & Theory. The Harry
Wong Videos on classroom routines was also mentioned. (Jim reviewed
one of these last year - Harry Wong covers real basic routines with a
large audience; he does a great job of promoting these routines.

3. Marilyn asked that we develop an action plan for getting Classroom
consequences reviewed with Staff.
4. Marilyn talked about and provided handouts on ways to vary
instruction to help manage the classroom and support students (e.g,
change time to complete a task, change the materials, vary how the
materials are delivered) She gave a worksheet chart to use with a
student to help plan what interventions we might want to use.

5. Jim Watson made the point that we may need to revisit with staff
our school wide agreements on when and how to give referrals. E.g.,
the first time a negative behavior occurs, the teacher deals with it;
only major referrals go to the office.

Minutes of Kennedy Meeting
GRADING SECOND STEP
1. Grading Second Step (comments): grade sheet is good; some said the
self evaluation worked, others said it didn't, Yvonne - too much of a
workload with her four classes; Scott - let's continue to use the
forms and process for the rest of the year, but look to revise the
grading system for next year.

EVALUATING SECOND STEP
2. Second Step Implementation - several felt it wasn't working well
partly do to too much time between sessions.

EBS GRANT REQUIRED QUARTERLY REPORTS
3. Kristin said we must do quarterly reports.

MAKING EVALUATION SURVEY SITE SPECIFIC
4. We will do a survey on Second Step, and add two questions to the
existing survey: a. What did you like about Second Step this year.
b. What changes would you like to make in Second Step.

5. Kristin will ask for staff time for the District EBS Survey.

6. We need to revisit Second Step at a later meeting.

USING SCHOOL DISCIPLINE LADDER

7. Question: Are staff using the discipline ladder appropriately.
Scott said it was in general. He was concerned about some under
reporting of levels for certain kids.

WHAT EXTRA SUPPORT IS GIVEN KIDS WITH D's & F's

8. Scott is looking at the kind of support being given to kids who
have received Ds and Fs. (e.g, who is being mentored, in KHAT,
Kennedy Card)

USING THE KENNEDY CARD
Select students take form to all staff & to same check in/out staff member.
Purpose: Report behavior (+ or - ) in class.
9. Scott said the Kennedy Card may be overused - Should it be used
for students who are just not doing their work?

SCHOOL RULES

10.. Bob said that we need to remind students of school rules all the
time. (Jim - it seems as if the staff needs to be reminded of school
rules also and school-wide agreements.)

OUT OF CLASS PROBLEM BEHAVIOR - SEXUAL HUGS

11. Nancy said the 8 th grade kids are into giving sexual hugs. When
they're told to break up, the argue with her and say "it's just a 30
second hug."

OUT OF CLASS PROBLEM BEHAVIOR -WALK-MAN USE
12. Nancy was concerned about Walk-Man use also. We need better
boundries. Scott said, be tough, take it away and ask them to come
get it tomorrow. Don't put up with arguments. If kids resist, just
give them a referral. We need to clarify our school-wide policies.

WHAT TO SAY TO RESISTENT KIDS
13. Bob suggested when getting kid resistance and arguing, say, "We
already have trouble with one school rule, don't add disrespect and
subordination to this."
OTHER PROBLEM ISSUES
14. Other problems: hats, hoods, earphones under hoods

REPEAT THE RULES!
15. Nancy said, "There's power in repeating the rule."

NEED TO PROVIDE STAFF WITH IDEAS ON HOW TO DIFFUSE KIDS
WHO ARGUE WITH STAFF
16. Bob said, "We should have a round robin again on how we diffuse
kids that argue with us."

17. Yvonne said, "The real problem is the kids. Even when the teacher
refuses to get involved in an argument, the kid continues after the
teacher and won't let up."

STAFF NEED STRATEGIES ON GIVING CONSEQUENCES
18. Nancy - "We need to share on how we give consequences."

FILM - HOW TO DIFFUSE ANGER
19. Marilyn N. said, "Get the film on ho to diffuse anger. Set up a
routine - tell them what will happen ahead of time (pre teach and
predict how kids might react, pre teach them how to function in the
situation, tell the kids you are watching them.

STRATEGY - SEND STUDENTS TO A PLACE IN THE ROOM
TO DO A CREATIVE PROBLEM IN RECORD BREAKING TIME

20. Marilyn had a second idea - Think of something that will stop all
activity and redirect kids into something different when breakdown
occurs. Nancy talked about have a book of problems at stations in the
room. When kids need a break she sends them to do a problem in
record breaking time.

STRATEGY - PICK UP TEACHING TEMPO
21. Marilyn - third idea - Pick up your speed with instruction so
kids are focusing because they're starting to miss things. Put kids
on a time limit.

STRATEGY - PRETEACH "I KNOW YOU CAN COME BACK QUIETYLY!"

22. Another problem is when kids parade their referrals back in
class. Bob said to pre teach. Say I'll be checking with your teacher
to see how you come back into the class. Marilyn said to set it up
so that students believe they can control themselves. "I know you can
come into the classroom quietly!" Challenge them. I'm going to time
you, and see how long you can stay on task today.

23. Several said that Bo needs a lot of support from all of us. Give
him positive feedback.

TRANSPARENCY OF BEHAVIOR DATA PRIOR TO EBS SURVEY

24. Kristin will give out the new E B S graph data with the EBS survey.

School Climate
The March 2003 issue of EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP by the Association for
Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) is filled with articles
related to "Creating Caring Schools." One article, "Creating A School
Community," was written by Eric Schaps and includes this fabulous quote:
"Community building should become--at a minimum--a strong complement to the
prevailing focus on academic achievement." Also noteworthy within the
article is the federal Safe and Drug-Free Schools program's recent
recognition of the importance of community building as an effective
violence prevention strategy. When you are talking about school climate,
community building is a piece of the puzzle.
